BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Meaghan Galvin established a new single-game program record with 13 draw controls, while 10 different Captains scored a goal as the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team capitalized on a well-balanced effort to cruise past Southern Virginia, 19-2, during a Capital Athletic Conference showdown on Thursday evening at the SVU Fields.
Against the Knights, Galvin continued to rewrite the program's draw control records. Having already broken the school's single-season and career marks, it seemed only fitting that she also added her name to the top of the single-game list as well. After just missing the mark with 11 draws last week against Randolph-Macon, she registered 13 on Thursday, which topped Kristyn Hankins' previous standard of 12 set against Shenandoah on March 11, 2007.
Along with her work on the draw, the reigning CAC Offensive Player of the Week also contributed six points, including three goals. Meanwhile,
Catie Chess added a team-high four strikes against the Knights, while
Kaysie Morningstar chipped in with her first collegiate hat-trick.
Sarah Culver came through with three points as well.
On the defensive side,
Kaitlyn Ready earned the victory after making three saves during the first 30 minutes of action. In the second half,
Bailey Lien made her lacrosse debut and chipped in with a perfect performance. The decorated field hockey goalkeeper came through with one save while keeping the Knights off the board.
With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 7-3 on the season, including 2-0 in league action. Meanwhile, Southern Virginia falls to 3-7 with an 0-3 mark in conference play.
In the early going, the Captains seemed content to trade two goals for every one scored by the Knights. Kicking things off,
Erin Callahan opened the action just 11 seconds into regulation before Galvin followed less than a minute later. After Southern Virginia's first tally, Culver responded before Chess added a shorthanded dart off a free-position attempt to snatch a 4-1 advantage.
Continuing the 2-for-1 deal, the Knights cut their deficit back down to two before Christopher Newport put an end to the seesaw affair. Blistering the opposition with an unrelenting assault, Callahan came back with her second score before
Carly Wilson assisted on back-to-back rockets by Chess and
Caitlin King during a 60-second showcase. Moments later, Galvin stung the back of the net with her second laser and assisted on another goal by Chess to push the lead to 9-2 midway through the opening half.
Looking to secure a running clock and a double-digit advantage,
Samantha Wettengel kicked off a late first-half push before Chess and Morningstar struck as well to snatch a 12-2 edge with eight minutes remaining. Although the hosts attempted to whittle down their deficit, the CNU defense suffocated the Knights and blanketed the field, while Ready stoned a late shot after an attacker slipped free to keep the 10-goal edge entering halftime.
Following the break,
Madison Chestnut tossed a quick goal on the board to stretch the lead before the defense imposed its will again. During a modest rally by Southern Virginia,
Mackenzie Regen pounced on a pair of ground balls to end two surges before Lien pocketed her first save to end another threat in the middle of the second stanza.
After brushing aside the SVU attack, Christopher Newport went back to work on the offensive side. First, Galvin and Wettengel converted back-to-back eight-meter shots to push the lead to 15-2 with 11 minutes remaining. Later, Galvin showed off her passing skills with assists on two straight tallies by Morningstar and
Katie Orrison to cap off her historic outing.
With little left to prove, Morningstar polished off her hat-trick with four minutes remaining before
Olivia Aumais put the finishing touches on the 19-2 win with the game's final goal to seal the conference victory.
Overall, Christopher Newport held a 33-6 advantage in shots and an 18-15 lead in ground balls.
Taryn Hannam-Zatz helped lead the defensive effort with two ground balls and a caused turnover, while
Claire Chadwick forced a miscue as well.
CNU will return to action on Saturday when the squad hosts Shenandoah at 2 p.m.
