Galvin Joins Exclusive Club, Posts 100th Career Assist as CNU Women’s Lacrosse Tops Shenandoah, 18-7

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Meaghan Galvin registered her 100th career assist and tied Erin Callahan with a game-high seven points as the two seniors helped lead the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team past Shenandoah, 18-7, during a non-conference battle on a sparkling Saturday afternoon at Captains Turf Field.

Against the Hornets, Galvin chipped in with two goals and five assists, including the 100th helper of her career. With that performance, she became just the second Captain in program history to post at least 100 career goals and 100 career assists, joining CNU Athletics Hall of Fame member Meghan Harkey. Additionally, Galvin is now the only active player at any level of the NCAA with 100 career goals, assists, and draw controls.

Along with her work on the offensive end, Galvin also secured a team-high 10 draws. That marked her third double-digit effort in the span of 11 days after notching 11 against Randolph-Macon on March 14 and a school-record 13 at Southern Virginia on Thursday. Putting that into perspective, Christopher Newport only had three double-digit draw efforts in the history of the program before Galvin's historic run over the past two weeks.

In addition to Galvin, Callahan registered seven points, including three goals. Catie Chess also struck four times for CNU, while Sarah Culver posted her sixth hat-trick of the season. Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Lindsay Weaver and Claire Chadwick both forced a pair of turnovers to help quiet the Hornet attack.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 8-3 on the season and extends its winning streak to five straight. The setback drops Shenandoah to 2-5 overall.

From the very beginning, the Captains showed elite ball movement to grab a quick advantage. Three minutes into regulation, Callahan fed a deep pass into Chess, who wiggled free on the interior for a pointblank goal. Later, after Shenandoah evened things at one, Galvin put on a clinic while making history during a two-minute showcase.

First, the senior All-American settled well behind the crease before lofting a perfect feed out to Samantha Wettengel, who caught it in-stride and slammed home a strike. With her 100th career assist in the books, Galvin began work on her second hundred just moments later. Once again, she found a soft spot behind the defense before finding another cutter as Callahan secured the pass and lit up the board with her first goal of the game.

Less than 30 seconds later, Callahan and Chess connected again for the squad's fourth tally on the way to a fast 4-1 edge.

Staring at a quick deficit, Shenandoah whistled for a timeout and attempted to regroup. Following the stoppage, the visitors gained possession and pieced together a fast clear to put the CNU defense on its heels. Facing a wave of attackers, Weaver held her ground and batted down a pass just in front of the goal to end the threat and flip the field.

After surviving the scare, the Captains went back on the attack. With 19 minutes left in the opening stanza, Galvin took control behind the crease, burned around the right post, and snapped off a bullet from the doorstep to push the lead to four. Less than a minute later, Kaysie Morningstar sprinted in front of the goal to attract the Shenandoah defense before Culver curled around the other way and had a clear lane to punch home Christopher Newport's sixth strike.

After Chess gave the hosts a 7-1 lead with a free-position goal, Shenandoah retaliated with back-to-back tallies before Wettengel did some work to clamp down on the Hornets' resurgence.

In the span of two minutes, Wettengel snatched a pair of clean draws and jump-started a fast-paced attack. After her freshman teammate bolted into the zone, Chess eventually gained possession and struck for the fourth time. Later, Wettengel saved an errant pass from slipping out of bounds to keep a second surge alive that ended when Callahan split a pair of Hornets and lined her second goal off a feed from Galvin.

Fittingly, after hustling around the field to help CNU set up two straight goals, Wettengel added her own dart after converting a feed from Galvin to push the lead to 10-3 with nine minutes left in the opening half.

Although Shenandoah was able to tack on two goals late in the period, Christopher Newport always had a response. Galvin used the turf to bounce a goal past the SU keeper before Weaver added an eight-meter shot and Callahan capped off her four-goal first half to grab a 13-5 advantage entering the break.

Facing an eight-goal deficit, the Hornets came out of halftime looking to make a quick statement. After forcing a turnover, Shenandoah bolted down the field, slipped past the defense, and had a breakaway opportunity. Unfazed by the situation, Bailey Lien stood tall in the crease and pounced on the ensuing shot to thwart the attempt and kick start another rally by her attack.

Following the defensive stand, Culver contributed two straight goals, including a free-position tally, to take a 15-5 lead and earn a running clock with 27 minutes left in regulation. Shortly thereafter, Caitlin King padded the advantage as she rolled up on her defender, spun around, and sniped her fifth strike of the season to push the lead to 11.

Meanwhile, the defense continued to do its job as well. After Shenandoah earned an eight-meter attempt, Chess, Julia Golden, and Mackenzie Regen swarmed the Hornet and forced an off-balance shot, which dribbled in front of the cage before Lien scooped it up. Later, Caitlin Cotter caught up to an attacker and forced a high shot after SU momentarily found an opening inside the zone before Hannah Curry tracked down another Hornet from behind and caused a turnover to end a separate threat.

On the other side of the field, the CNU attack never faltered. Katie Orrison found daylight after a pass from Galvin before Madison Chestnut added the final score after burning a strike off a free-position attempt to help seal the 18-7 victory.

Overall, Christopher Newport out-shot Shenandoah, 32-17, and held a 21-17 lead in ground balls. As usual, the Captains also dominated on the draw as the squad won 19 of the 27 battles. Along with Galvin's work, Mariah Ginebra contributed four draw controls.

In the crease, Kaitlyn Ready earned the victory after making a pair of saves in the first half, while Lien added one save and two ground balls in relief.

The Captains will return to action on Wednesday when the squad hosts Mary Washington in a key CAC match-up at 4 p.m.
