NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Junior
Justin Cerny and rookie
Andy Mason pieced together excellent performances for the No. 28 Christopher Newport men's tennis team, but the Captains fell short against nationally-ranked Washington & Lee on Sunday afternoon, 5-4. The Generals improved to 8-4 after the win over two of the top teams in the Atlantic South, while the Captains fall to 6-6.
Cerny and Mason helped start the day off on the right foot for the Captains with wins in two of the three doubles matchups. Cerny paired with
David Reed on the top line to capture a tight 8-6 win over Will Bannister and Charlie Kittredge. Mason and partner
William Trang grabbed the win at No. 2, downing Mac Zheng and Thomas Harmon, 8-4.
The Generals earned the win at No. 3 doubles, and then captured four wins in singles play to secure the team victory. A three-setter between Reed and regionally-ranked Jordan Krasner at the top spot finished in favor of W&L by a final score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. CNU also battled at 4, 5, and 6 with
Dominic Lacombe,
Arttu Fiva, and
Nicholas Ruzicka all suffering losses in close matches.
The Captains would pick up wins at 2 and 3, however, to make it a one-score match at the final. Mason continued his exceptional freshman season with a straight set win over Zach Ely at No. 3 (6-4, 6-1), and picked up his fifth dual win of the year. At No. 2, Cerny downed Bannister by a final score of 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.
Christopher Newport will look to erase a three-match skid when they host nationally-ranked Mary Washington on Saturday, March 25. The Capital Athletic Conference match will begin at 3:00 pm.
