Women's Game Notes
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men held onto their national ranking at No. 3, and the CNU women remain high in the poll after slipping to No. 8 this week, as the Captains are one of only three programs in the nation with both the men's and women's basketball teams ranked in the top ten. CNU has just two regular season home games left, with the first coming on Wednesday night in another crucial Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader against Marymount University. The women's game will tip off at 5:30 pm and the men will follow at approximately 7:30 pm.Â
CNU is joined by only Amherst College and Washington University (Mo.) as programs with both teams ranked in the top ten nationally, and the Captains, with a 39-3 combined record, have the second best combined winning percentage in Division III this season. Only Whitman College (40-2) with a .952 winning percentage has a better mark.Â
On Wednesday night, the Captains will look to improve on that stellar record against a pair of the top defensive teams in the conference. The Saints come into Wednesday's twin set with both teams ranked in the top three in the CAC in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense.
First up, the women's battle will feature the Captains (20-1, 13-1) facing the Marymount women (17-4, 11-3) at 5:30 pm. The Saints are currently sitting in third place in the league standings with a two-game lead over fourth and trailing CNU and Mary Washington at the top by two games with four left to play. Â In the first matchup this season, the two teams were tangled in a close battle from the start, with CNU escaping with a three-point win on the road, 54-51. It was the only game this season that the Captains' potent offense has been held to fewer than 61 points in a game.
The CNU attack has been led by Sam Porter, averaging 12.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Porter has also moved up to seventh on CNU's all-time steals chart, with 219 career thefts. The next name on the list is Tia Perry, with 271 steals. Porter leads the CAC in total steals and steals average, while ranking 15th nationally with 3.81 steals per game. The strength of CNU's offense comes in it's balance, as the Captains average over 74 points per game with only one player averaging double figures.Â
Marymount will counter the league's leading offense with the CAC's leading defense, allowing just 50.2 points per game this season. Opponents are shooting just over 34% from the field against the Saints this season, while forcing nearly 21 turnovers per game. Contrasting CNU's offensive balance, the Saints feature three players averaging at least 10 points per game and just six players with 5.8 ppg or better. Leading the way is junior forward Nicole Viscuso, with 11.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while rookie Regan Lohr (10.3 ppg) and senior Kiki Laux (10.2 ppg) are also in double figures.Â
The women's matchup is also the annual WBCA Pink Out game for the Captains; fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of the fight against breast cancer.
Following the women's matchup, the third-ranked CNU men (19-2, 13-1) will look to maintain their spot atop the CAC standings against a feisty Marymount squad coming in with a 10-11 overall record, including a 7-7 league mark. The CAC standings on the men's side remain as contentious as ever, with nine teams still in the hunt for one of the six playoff spots. Marymount is in that group, Â currently tied for fourth with Wesley College.Â
The Captains are coming off one of the team's most complete outings in a win at St. Mary's (Md.), in which the offense and defense performed exceptionally well. The offense was led by senior
Tim Daly, who poured in a career-high 28 points on 12-of-13 shooting in one of the finest single game efforts in program history. He was rewarded as the CAC Player of the Week after the game, in which he also hauled in 11 rebounds for a double-double. Daly moved into the team's scoring lead, averaging 11.9 points per game coming into Wednesday's tilt.Â
Head coach
John Krikorian has leaned heavily on team balance and a sturdy defense this season. Offensively, CNU ranks second in the league in scoring (74.5 ppg) without boasting any single player with over 12 points per game. Defensively, the Captains are by far the league's leading scoring defense (57.3 ppg allowed), which ranks second in the country only to St. Norbert (56.3). The stifling CNU defense has allowed 60 points or fewer in 14 of their 21 games this year.Â
Marymount will be looking to flip the script on the Captains following a 70-57 win for CNU in Arlington earlier this season. The Saints have suffered some extremely tight losses this season, including a one-point setback to nationally-ranked Salisbury, 57-56, after the Sea Gulls converted on a buzzer-beating three-pointer for the win. In their last contest, Marymount fell by just two points to Wesley College, 78-76, and the Saints also have a six-point loss to Frostburg State.Â
Junior Dimitri Rucker is the team's leading scorer with 11.8 points per game, while senior George Anderson is adding 11.0. The Saints have started the same five players in all but one game this season, with the four of the starting five averaging 25 minutes per game or more.Â
During CNU's doubleheader, the Department of Athletics will recognize the high academic achievers for the Fall 2016 term. During halftime, nearly 300 student-athletes will be recognized for their performance in the classroom as part of the annual recognition ceremony. During halftime of the men's game, CNU will also induct it's new induction class of Chi Alpha Sigma, the national honor society for college athletes.Â
