CARY, N.C. - Christopher Newport's run production remained at a high level on Sunday as the 15th-ranked Captains took their final two games in the Grand Slam Triangle Classic. CNU defeated Hood, 9-0, in the opener and then downed Salem, 9-6.
Keith Parr's squad is now 7-1 and the Captains have won seven straight.
Christopher Newport also had a big day at the plate on Saturday, winning two games decisively over Greensboro and Piedmont. The Captains beat Greensboro in the first game of the day, 15-1 in six innings, and then downed Piedmont, 11-5.
The Captains scored a combined 44 runs on 60 hits in the four victories in the weekend classic.
In Sunday's opening 9-0 victory over Hood, the Captains plated six runs in the top of the seventh inning to blow open a close game. Junior
Leah Andrews opened the scoring with a home run in the third inning, her first of three hits in the game. Junior
Rachael Payne also posted three hits and two runs batted in for CNU.
Senior
Tara Heatwole picked up the victory to improve to 3-1 on the season. Heatwole scattered four hits and struck out three.
In the 9-6 win over Salem, the Captains trailed 6-4 before scoring five times in the bottom of the fifth to surge to the victory. Sophomore
Nicole Killen ended the scoring by smacking a three-run home run to break a 6-6 tie. Senior
Jenna Sprinkle went four-for-four in the nightcap.
Senior starter
Maiven McKnight earned the victory, pitching the first five innings for the Captains. She is now 2-1 on the season. Freshman
Aubrey Bates finished up by pitching the final two innings to earn her first save of the season.
Following the busy weekend of action in North Carolina, the Captains will be heading to Georgia next weekend for two doubleheaders at Emory in Atlanta on Saturday and Sunday, and then a twin bill at Piedmont in Demorest on Tuesday, March 7, during spring break at CNU. Christopher Newport returns home to play Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, March 12, at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
