15th-Ranked Softball Plates 26 Runs In Saturday Sweep in North Carolina

CARY, N.C. - Christopher Newport broke out the bats on Saturday, winning two games decisively in the Grand Slam Triangle Classic over Greensboro and Piedmont. The Captains beat Greensboro in the first game of the day, 15-1 in six innings, and then downed Piedmont, 11-5.

Keith Parr's squad scored a combined 26 runs on 34 hits in the sweep, and the 15th-ranked Captains are now 5-1 to start the season.

The Captains will be back at it with two more games Sunday in the weekend classic. CNU will play Hood at 1:00 p.m. and Salem at 3:00 p.m.

In the opener on Saturday, the Captains scored all 15 of their runs in the final two innings in the 15-1 victory over Greensboro. The Pride held a 1-0 advantage before CNU scored eight runs in the fifth and seven more in the sixth to put the game away. Junior Leah Andrews posted three hits for CNU and senior Jenna Sprinkle drove home three runs. Junior Brittney Walters homered for the Captains.

Senior pitcher Tara Heatwole went the distance, allowing just one unearned run on three hits in six innings of work. She is now 2-1 on the season.

In game two, the Captains used a seven-run second inning to jump in front of Piedmont and never looked back. Junior Rachael Payne and freshman Grace Wild each had three hits while junior Leah Andrews and freshman Calah Savage blasted home runs.

Freshman Aubrey Bates improved to 2-0 on the season, allowing just two earned runs with four strikeouts in seven innings.

Following a weekend of action in North Carolina, the Captains will be heading to Georgia next weekend for two doubleheaders at Emory in Atlanta on Saturday and Sunday, and then a twin bill at Piedmont in Demorest on Tuesday, March 7, during spring break at CNU.

Christopher Newport returns home to play Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, March 12, at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
