NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Captains of Christopher Newport host men's and women's championship games on Saturday at the Freeman Center. The Capital Athletic Conference tournament comes to a close as the top two seeds meet in each bracket. The women's title game begins at 2:00 p.m. as top-seeded CNU hosts second-seeded Mary Washington. The men's title game follows at approximately 4:30 p.m. as the top-seeded Captains host second-seeded Salisbury.

The winners of each game will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship beginning next week.

Christopher Newport's women's squad, ranked 11th in the nation, defeated York in the semi-finals Thursday night at the Freeman Center, 73-52, Bill Broderick's team is 24-2 and will play a Mary Washington squad that needed overtime to advance Thursday night over Marymount, 56-54. The Eagles are the defending champions of the CAC and are 23-3 heading into Saturday's action.

CNU and Mary Washington split their two games this season, with each team winning at home. This is the second appearance for Christopher Newport in the CAC title game, and the first since the 2013-2014 season. Mary Washington will be making its third straight appearance in the CAC title game.

The matchup will be the 48th meeting in the series between CNU and UMW, with the Captains holding a 27-20 advantage in the rivalry that dates back to the 1971-72 season.

As for the men's game, CNU and Salisbury have also established a fierce rivalry. The Captains and Sea Gulls will be meeting for the third straight season in the CAC Championship, with each team capturing the title on its home floor the last two seasons.

This will be the fourth straight title game appearance for John Krikorian's team in as many years of membership in the CAC.  The Captains have won 18 straight games and are ranked third in the nation. CNU defeated Marymount, 78-53, on Thursday night in the semi-finals to advance to the title tilt. The win was the 25th straight for the Captains at the Freeman Center dating back to December of 2015.

Salisbury, ranked 20th in the country, was pushed to double overtime by York before escaping with an 86-80 win in the other semi-final in Salisbury, Md., Thursday evening.

CNU and Salisbury have played 39 games since their series began in the 1980-81 campaign. The Captains hold a 24-15 edge in the series, and the squads split their two meetings this season with each team winning at home.

Since the Captains joined the CAC, Christopher Newport and Salisbury have met 11 times with CNU holding a 6-5 edge. The last four games have been decided by just six points, with two of the games going to overtime including last season's championship game, won by CNU at the Freeman Center, 68-67.
