NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will open up its 2017 campaign on Wednesday at 3 p.m. when CNU hosts Washington & Lee in a non-conference showdown at Captains Turf Field.
The Captains, who are coming off of an 11-5 campaign last year, were picked third in the annual Capital Athletic Conference Preseason Poll. Meanwhile, the Generals were named the preseason favorites in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and already boast a win this year after upending No. 16 Mary Washington in their opener last week.

A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS
Christopher Newport returns nine starters from last year's team, which led the CAC in goals-per-game (13.13) and save percentage (.541). Among the returning veterans,
Meaghan Galvin was named to the Inside Lacrosse Player of the Year Watch List after collecting second-team All-American honors last season. The reigning CAC Co-Player of the Year led the team with 39 goals, 33 assists, and 82 draw controls.
Fellow All-Region performers
Catie Chess and
Emma Walsh are back as well. Chess ranked third on the team with 42 points last season, while Walsh contributed a .547 save percentage and an 8.36 goals-against-average during a phenomenal freshman campaign.
Sarah Culver, who ranked second on the team with 44 points last year, also earned All-Conference plaudits for her work as a freshman. Senior

Tess D'Arcy have been previously celebrated by the CAC for their efforts as well.
Overall, of the seven players who scored at least 15 goals last year, five are back in 2017. Along with the decorated veterans,
Colleen Bourgal added 16 goals and 23 total points, while
Lindsay Weaver struck 15 times and caused 11 turnovers.
Erin Callahan also returns after an injury sidelined her in 2016. The senior was previously an All-State selection and led the team with 24 assists as a freshman.
SCOUTING THE GENERALS
Washington & Lee is coming off of a 2016 season in which the Generals claimed their seventh straight ODAC championship while advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The squad eventually finished last year with a 13-6 overall record, including a perfect 9-0 ledger in league action.
Headlining the team's veteran contingent, Parker Hamill and Haley Tucker both earned first-team All-Conference honors last year. Hamill helped W&L rank 26th nationally in scoring defense while leading the team with 28 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers. On the other end, Tucker was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year after totaling 34 points and a team-high 49 draw controls.
In their opener this year, the Generals erupted for four straight goals to kick off the second half on the way to a 5-4 victory over Mary Washington. Tucker led the way with three goals, while Cordelia Peters and Maggie Waxter both added strikes as well. On the defensive side, Hannah Wiltshire and Elliot Gilbert combined to make four saves between the pipes.
SERIES HISTORY
CNU and Washington & Lee have met nine times with the Generals holding an 8-1 edge in the all-time series. The two squads last met in 2015 when W&L picked up a 12-7 victory in Newport News. During that contest, Weaver scored a pair of goals for CNU, while Galvin added a goal and an assist. On the other side, Lauren Procaccino had five goals for the Generals, and Hayley Soutter scored four times.
