YORK, Pa. - Positioning for the post-season is the mindset Saturday as the Capital Athletic Conference basketball regular season comes to a close. The nationally-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport travel to York College for a doubleheader with the Spartans. The women's game will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by the men's action starting at 3:00 p.m. at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
The Christopher Newport women's squad has a one-game lead in the CAC standings heading into Saturday's action. The Captains, ranked 12th in the country, are assured of at least a tie for the regular-season conference championship, but could be seeded anywhere from first to third in next week's CAC Tournament based on Saturday's results.
Bill Broderick's squad is 22-2 overall and 15-2 in conference action, and coming off a 99-61 victory Wednesday night at Southern Virginia.
The York women's squad is 17-7 overall and 11-6 in the conference. The Spartans and Captains met at the Freeman Center on December 11th, with CNU posting a 76-64 triumph.
On the men's side, Christopher Newport has won 16 straight games and has already wrapped up the CAC's regular-season title. The Captains, ranked third in the country, are 22-2 overall and 16-1 in conference play. CNU is assured of a home game next Thursday, February 23, in the semi-final round of the CAC Tournament.
John Krikorian's squad captured its second-straight regular-season crown Wednesday night by beating Southern Virginia, 69-45, while second-place Salisbury dropped an 85-73 decision at St. Mary's. The results gave the Captains a two-game lead in the conference standings with just one game remaining.
York College has a record of 16-8 overall heading into Saturday's contest, and the Spartans are 12-5 in league play. York is already assured of a third-place finish in the conference, and will host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday night as the CAC Tournament gets underway.
