Entering his 14th year and 13th season in 2025-26, Bill Broderick has led the Christopher Newport women's basketball program on an historic run during his tenure. His squads have compiled an overall record of 308-47 for a winning percentage of 86.8 percent.
Since taking the helm in 2012, Broderick has established himself as one of the top coaches in Division III women's basketball. He has cemented his status as the winningest coach in program history and ranks in the top ten across all three NCAA divisions with an 84.7 career winning percentage. During the 2024-25 season, he reached 300 career wins in the second fewest games in NCAA Division III history (346).Â
A three-time Region Coach of the Year (2017, 2022, 2023) has also been named the Conference Coach of the Year five times. He has led CNU Women's Basketball into the NCAA Tournament in 11 of his first 12 seasons and reached at least the Round of 16 in nine of those postseason trips.Â
The 2022-23 season stands apart in Broderick's career as a benchmark year for the CNU women's basketball team as the Captains earned the No. 1 national ranking for the first time in program history and carried it through an undefeated season all the way to the NCAA Division III National Championship Game. CNU fell to Transylvania, 57-52, in the programs first ever title game appearance to capture a National Runner-Up finish with a program-record 31-1 overall record.Â
Broderick coached the team through a record-breaking campaign that included the most points in program history, three-pointers, and assists in a single season. Despite facing adversity that included losing three starters to injury, Broderick guided the Captains to their third Final Four appearance behind All-Americans Anaya Simmons and Sondra Fan.Â
For his efforts, Broderick was named the D3hoops.com National Co-Coach of the Year, sharing the honor with Transylvania's Juli Fulks, and showcased some of his best work by sporting a spotless overall record heading into the national championship game. CNU led the nation in scoring margin and ranked in the top-25 in both scoring offense and defense.Â
Among other accomplishments, Broderick helped lead the Captains to a record-breaking 43-game winning streak that ranks in the top-ten all-time in Division III women's hoops after posting a 26-1 overall record. In conference games during his tenure, Broderick's winning percentage is equally remarkable as the Captains have posted a 110-20 conference mark and an 84.6 percent winning clip. He is the all-time leader in winning percentage both overall and in conference play in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference.Â
But perhaps most impressively, Broderick's postseason numbers are staggering. In 11 of his first 12 seasons, he has led the squad to NCAA Tournament runs, including the national runner-up finish in 2023, a Final Four effort in 2017, an Elite Eight appearance during the 2013 tournament, and Sweet 16 finishes in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022.
After taking over at CNU, Broderick guided the Captains in a stellar debut performance as he helped the squad reach the Elite Eight for just the second time ever in 2012-13. During the team’s run to the NCAA Tournament, Christopher Newport won the USA South Conference Tournament Championship, shared the regular season title, and eventually finished at 29-3 overall.Â
Picking up right where he left off, Broderick followed up his impressive debut season with an outstanding 2013-14 campaign as well. Over the course of the season, Broderick’s squad ripped off a 14-game winning streak and beat a pair of top-20 opponents. During the regular season, CNU took down No. 8 York, 67-64, during an overtime thriller at the Freeman Center before toppling No. 16 Ferrum, 75-66, on the road during the second round of the NCAA Tournament.Â
Leading Christopher Newport back to the Sweet 16 for the second straight year, Broderick became one of just seven coaches in NCAA history to guide a program to the Sweet 16 in each of their first two seasons with the team.Â
Broderick's squad then posted another historic campaign in 2016-17, when CNU put together one of the finest seasons in program history. Climbing to as high as No. 5 in the national rankings during the regular season, CNU finished the year ranked 4th after appearing in the NCAA National Semifinals. The Captains were 29-3 overall with a 16-2 record in conference play en route to conference regular season and tournament titles. Along the way, the team would post the second longest win streak in program history at the time with a 19-0 start to the year. In the postseason, CNU downed a pair of top ten teams before suffering the loss to undefeated national champion Amherst College in the Final Four.
Ahead of the 2017-18 season, the Captains hauled in the program’s highest ever national ranking at the time at No. 2 in the D3hoops.com Preseason Poll. With another 25-win campaign and run to the NCAA Sweet 16, Broderick rounded out another successful season and finished the year ranked No. 13 nationally. CNU featured one of the most dominant defenses in the nation, leading the country in steals with 534 thefts, ranking second all-time at CNU. The team outscored opponents by an average of 21.1 points per game -- the highest scoring margin in CNU lore.Â
That defense carried over into the 2018-19 campaign, where Christopher Newport again impressed with a young roster buoyed by 10 incoming freshmen. The Captains ranked second nationally in steals and sixth in turnovers forced. The Captains' senior class became the first unit in program history to reach the NCAA Tournament all four years of their tenure as Christopher Newport closed the year ranked No. 21 in the nation following another Sweet 16 appearance.Â
The suffocating defense has been a trademark of the Broderick coaching tenure at Christopher Newport as the Captains have ranked in the top five nationally in steals and turnovers forced in each of the past eight seasons. His "Captains Chaos" pressure has registered six of the top ten single season efforts at CNU in steals over the last eight years.Â
Prior to becoming the eighth women’s basketball coach in the history of the CNU program, Broderick compiled an extensive resume on the sidelines, including stints as an assistant coach at Division I programs University of Pittsburgh and University of Arizona.Â
Broderick came to Christopher Newport from Bucknell, where he served as Assistant Coach for two seasons, including a stint as the Interim Head Coach at the end of the 2011-12 campaign. Prior to his time with the Bison, Broderick was the Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Coach under CNU alumna Karen Barefoot at Elon. He recruited back-to-back Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and coordinated the number one ranked recruiting class in the conference in 2009-10. Broderick’s 26-year coaching resume includes experience at nearly every level of competition, including 11 years as an NCAA Division I assistant coach. He served as an assistant at the University of Arizona from 1995-98, winning the 1996 WNIT Championship and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1998. He was also Associate Head Coach at the University of Pittsburgh where he assisted in the biggest turnaround in program history.Â
Along with his time at the collegiate level, Broderick was head coach at George Mason High School in Falls Church, Virginia, guiding his team to the State Semifinals and earning Region Coach of the Year honors in 2007-08.Â
The Vienna, Va. native graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education in 1993 from Frostburg State University where he continued on to earn a Master of Education in Health and Physical Education in 1995.Â
Broderick and his wife Jennifer have two children, Cole and Laney, and reside in Yorktown.Â
