No. 28 CNU Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season at Swarthmore Invite

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team will open up the spring portion of the schedule this weekend with three matches on the road as part of the 2017 Swarthmore Invite. First, the Captains will take on the host Garnet at 8:00 am on Saturday, February 18, before also facing Haverford College at 2:30 pm. On Sunday, CNU will face their second nationally-ranked foe of the weekend when they take on No. 24 Whitman College at 11:00 am to round out the weekend's events.

The Captains opened the season in the fall with a 1-1 record in a pair of matches in Pittsburgh, Pa. Swarthmore and Haverford will be opening their dual schedules this weekend, while Whitman enters the weekend with a 3-2 overall record. 

After the fall season, the Captains were ranked nationally as a team, while also boasting the No. 49-ranked singles player in the nation in junior Justin Cerny. Cerny will lead a veteran team back to the courts this spring, including fellow junior David Reed. Reed and Cerny are tabbed the No. 10-ranked doubles tandem in the Atlantic South region, while Cerny is also ranked 11th in singles play. During the fall opener, the Captains collected a win over nationally-ranked Oberline College before falling to 7th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University.

In Swarthmore's lone appeaarance this fall, the ITA Regional Championships, junior Mark Fallati led the way with a 4-1 overall performance in singles and a 3-1 mark in doubles with partner Josh Powell. Haverford was led by Rob Kresch and Arnav Patodia in doubles play in the same tournament, also posting a 3-1 record. As for Whitman, the Blues opened the year with two losses to Division I foes, but have run off three convincing dual victories against Lewis & Clark, Gustavus Adolphus, and Pomona-Pitzer. Zach Hewlin has gone 2-2 at the top spot so far this season. 

Following this weekend's season-opening matches, the Captains will host their home opener against Chowan College on February 26.
