NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Looking to become the first team since 2003-04 to win back-to-back women's soccer championships, the top-seeded and 8th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team will host #2 Frostburg State at 8:00 pm on Saturday night in the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference Championship. The game will be played as part of a championship doubleheader as the CNU men take the field at 5:00 pm.

Christopher Newport enters the contest with an unbeaten 17-0-1 record and will take on a Frostburg State team with a 9-7-2 overall record. This year's conference title game mirrors last season's when the Bobcats traveled to Newport News for a 1-0 loss to the Captains, who earned their first ever CAC title. Frostburg State seeks their third title after capturing the crown in 2012 and 2014.
Earlier this season, the Captains dispatched of the Frostburg State squad at home, 4-0. Since suffering that loss to the Captains, the Bobcats have run off six straight wins, outscoring opponents 12-1. Meanwhile, CNU has continued it's historic campaign, matching the program record for wins in a season while also setting new standards for winning (15) and unbeaten streaks (18). The winning team on Saturday will advance into the NCAA Tournament with the league's automatic qualifying berth.
In the regular season victory, junior
Gabby Gillis had a stellar performance to lead the way with two goals and an assist. Rookie Riley Cook netted the gamewinner and
Alexis Haycraft also scored on a penalty kick to round out the scoring.Â
For the year, the Captains dominating offense has been matched by a stifling defensive performance as well. Senior
Carly Maglio has re-written the record books at Christopher Newport and continues to climb the all-time charts at the conference level as well. This season, she is enjoying a career-best 0.49 goals-against average with eight shutouts and a 16-0-1 overall record.Â
Already an All-Region midfielder last season, Gillis has burst open her offensive game in the third year of her career. The junior has set career high's in every statistical category with 30 points on 12 goals and six assists. Sophomore
Carson Pokorny has also been exceptional up top, scoring six goals and adding a league-high 11 assists for 23 points this season.Â
Frostburg State comes in with Brooke Shehade leading the offense. Shehade has 23 points on 10 goals and three assists and she is the only Bobcats player to reach double digits in points this season. Danielle Ferris has added three goals and three helpers for nine points to rank second on the team. In goal, FSU has split time evenly between two players, Emily Faust and Jenny Bullers, with Faust posting a 0.80 GAA and .864 save percentage to lead the way.Â
