Four CNU Men's Soccer Players Collect United Soccer Coaches All-South Atlantic Region Honors

2017 All-South Atlantic Region Teams

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The United Soccer Coaches announced the 2017 men's soccer All-Region teams late Tuesday night, listing the most Christopher Newport selections since 2011 with four Captains represented. Senior Jimmy Grace headlined the group as a repeat first team All-Region pick, while Stephen Durbin, Andrew Gogolin, and Bobby Seifert were all also honored.

The four honorees from the coaches' association is the most in a single season since 2011 when CNU posted a record-tying six on the All-Atlantic South Region squad. Durbin and Gogolin were each tabbed as second team All-Region picks while Seifert garnered his first career nod as a member of the third team.

Grace capped a sensational career in his fifth year as a Captain with his second straight Conference Player of the Year award. He led the league in scoring with a second consecutive 32-point season while setting a new career high with his conference-best 14 goals scored. That mark is tied for eighth best in CNU history and was paired with four assists for the 32-point performance. He is only the third player in CNU men's soccer history to earn Conference Player of the Year honors more than once.

The CNU midfielder helped pace the nation's second-leading scoring offense, capping the year with 3.67 goals per game. Grace registered five multi-goal performances during the season and was held scorelses in a game only six times. For his career, the 2016 first team All-American ranks tied for sixth in career goals (35) and tied for ninth in career points (87) in CNU lore.

Repeating as a second team selection in his second season with the Captains, Durbin hauled in another postseason award after helping Grace lead the dangerous attack. Also a part of that high-powered offense was Gogolin, who earned his first career All-Region selection following his senior campaign. Both players were first team All-Conference selections this season after turning in standout campaigns. Durbin scored 27 points on 12 goals and there assists and was among the national leaders in game-winning goals with six this season. He led the league and finished the year ranked 14th nationally in gamewinners as the junior's penchant for the big moment extended into overtime, where he picked up a pair of game-winning tallies this season. Senior Andrew Gogolin was one of only two players to start all 18 games this season and he turned in another exceptional campaign. He scored 19 points on seven goals and five assists, ranking second on the team in helpers. He led the team in total shots and finished the year with one gamewinner.

Finally, junior defender Bobby Seifert collected his first career All-Region selection after earning first team All-Conference honors in his third year at CNU. Seifert started 17 games at center back and played nearly 1500 minutes for the Captains defense. He helped CNU post a 14-3-1 overall record with six shutouts and a 1.04 goals-against average. With Seifert anchoring the back, the CNU defense gave up just 7.1 shots per game. The stifling defense was especially good in the first half, holding opponents to just five goals all season.

CNU won the CAC regular season title with an 8-0-1 conference record and concluded the year with a loss in the conference championship match against Mary Washington, with a 14-3-1 record. The Captains were led by the quartet of All-Region performers and have now won at least 14 games in eight of the last 10 seasons.
