Top-Seeded Christopher Newport Hosts #3 Mary Washington in CAC Men's Soccer Championship Saturday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The stage is set for a rematch in the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship, as the top-seeded Christopher Newport men's soccer team will look to capture its third conference title in the last four seasons when they take on third-seeded Mary Washington Saturday evening at 5:00 pm. The 2017 CAC Championship will be played at Captains Field for the second straight year against the Eagles as the Captains host a conference championship doubleheader with the women taking the field at 8:00 pm.

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for the CAC Championship bout against the Eagles at CNUsports.com/live. Ticket prices are, cash only, $5 for adults and $3 for children/students. CNU students with a valid ID will be admitted free.

Christopher Newport is 14-2-1 entering Saturday's bout against the Eagles, who carry a 14-4-1 record into the postseason kickoff. The rematch will give the CNU senior class a chance to win three out of four conference titles, while Mary Washington hopes to clinch it's first men's soccer crown since 2001.

Earlier this season, the two teams battled in Fredericksburg, Va. with CNU coming out with a tight 2-1 win. The Eagles advanced to the Championship game with a 3-1 win over Frostburg State in the first round and a 1-0 victory at St. Mary's (Md.) in the CAC Semifinals. CNU downed Salisbury, 3-0, in the other semifinal matchup to set up the rematch between the two teams. The winning team will advance into the NCAA Tournament with the league's automatic qualifying berth.

In the Captains' win over then nationally-ranked Mary Washington during the regular season, shots were limited between both of the league's top defensive units. CNU earned a first-half goal from Daniel Zeitoun and then picked up the gamewinner on a penalty kick from Jimmy Grace in the 82nd minute of play.

This season, Grace has followed up his All-American and Conference Player of the Year junior season with another standout campaign, posting his second consecutive 30-point season. He leads the league with 32 points on 14 goals and four assists, including another tally in the CAC Tournament on Wednesday night. Junior Stephen Durbin has 12 goals and three assists for 27 points this year, and the duo leads the nation's leading scoring offense at 3.82 goals per game.

Mary Washington was nationally-ranked for the bulk of the season before a pair of CAC losses knocked them out of the Top 25. The offense, averaging over two goals per game, has been led by rookie Jeremy Hokenson with 19 points on seven goals and five assists. Junior Justin Carey has also scored seven goals this season for 14 points.

The Eagles are looking to secure the program's first title since 2001 and the ninth in league history. CNU, working on year number five in the CAC, will be playing for the team's third championship.
