NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Riding a seven game winning streak after a dominating victory on Wednesday night, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will look to make it eight straight on Saturday night as the Captains host Frostburg State University at 6:00 pm. CNU (8-2-0, 3-0-0) will take on the Bobcats (3-7-2, 1-2-0) at Captains Field as part of a doubleheader with the women's teams.
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com/live, with links also found on the soccer schedule on the CNU Athletics website. The Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader will begin with a 4:00 pm kickoff between the CNU and FSU women's teams, while the men take the field approximately 25 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
The all-time series favors the home team, 5-0-2, as the Captains have never lost to Frostburg State. Last season, CNU captured a pair of 2-1 victories, including a thrilling double-overtime victory in the CAC semifinals. In that matchup,
Stephen Durbin connected on a diving header in the 107th minute of action to propel CNU into the 2017 CAC Championship Game.
Durbin is at the forefront of one of the nation's most electric offenses this season, as the Captains lead the country in goals per game (4.80). CNU ranks fourth nationally in points (134), goals (48), and assists (38) after scoring multiple goals in all but two games this season. The red-hot attack has been particularly impressive of late, averaging six goals per game over the last five.
Senior
Jimmy Grace leads the team and ranks second in the league with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists. Durbin is next on the squad, ranking third in the CAC with 18 total points on eight goals and two assists. Five CNU players are in double figure scoring this season, including seniors
Andrew Gogolin (13 pts - 5g, 3a),
James Lee (11 pts - 5g, 1a), and sophomore
Noah Peizer (11 pts - 4g, 3a). Fifteen different Captains have scored at least one goal this season.
Frostburg State comes into the game after opening conference play with a 2-1 win at Wesley, followed by losses to St. Mary's (Md.), 3-1, and at Mary Washington, 1-0. Offensively, Josh McRobie has scored eight points on four goals, including one game-winner, to lead the Frostburg attack. Logan Imbraguglio has scored twice on four shots taken and ranks second on the team with four points scored.
Following the league action on Saturday night, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will travel to St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday October 11 for an afternoon kickoff against the Seahawks.
