NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With a potential unbeaten regular season on the line, the 8th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team will take on Marymount University at Captains Field on Wednesday night. Kickoff against the Saints is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
Prior to Wednesday evening's kickoff, the Captains were recognized again by the United Soccer Coaches as the eighth-ranked team in the country in a poll released Tuesday afternoon. CNU has been ranked as high as No. 7 this season, and holds their positioning at No. 8 for the second consecutive week. Ranked ahead of CNU in order is the University of Chicago, TCNJ, Williams, Willam Smith, Hardin-Simmons, Washington (Mo.), and Messiah.
CNU will carry a 15-0-1 overall record, including a perfect 7-0-0 mark in conference play, into the regular season finale. Marymount will try to play the role of spoiler, sporting a 2-11-2 overall record with a 1-7-0 mark against the league. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com/live -- links can also be found on the women's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.
The Captains have won 15 of 16 games played this year with the program's longest unbeaten streak, including a current 13-game winning streak. CNU has been remarkably balanced, as they are one of just seven teams in the nation ranked in the Top 40 in both scoring offense and goals-against average. The Captains are 18th nationally in scoring, pouring in 3.50 goals per game, and 37th nationally in GAA, with a 0.615 mark.
Leading the offense has been rookie sensation
Riley Cook, who became the first freshman in program history to register a 30-point season. She leads the league in scoring and total goals, with 13, and paces the Captains' torrid offense this season. Junior
Gabby Gillis is right behind her rookie teammate with a career-best 25 points on 10 goals and five assists, while sophomore
Carson Pokorny leads the conference with seven assists and ranks third on the team with 17 points.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper
Carly Maglio continues to add to her illustrious career as the winningest netminder in program history. She leads the league and ranks 33rd nationally in goals-against average with a 0.56 mark, making 39 saves on 98 shots faced this season. The back line in front of her has been stellar, leading the Captains to eight shutouts during the campaign. Senior All-Region center back
Danielle Pratt anchors the group with rookie
Alexi Manley and outside backs
Shaye Doherty and
Keiley McCarthy.
The Captains will be taking on a Marymount squad that has scored just 11 goals this season. Four of those tallies have come from sophomore scoring leader Karen Reyes, who has added two assists for 10 points this year. Sophomore Gabby Cabrales has added three scores in her second year.
Following the regular season finale in Newport News, CNU will have a full week to prepare for the 2017 CAC Tournament, as they have earned a first-round bye with their fifth consecutive regular season championship. The Captains will host the winner of the #4/5 seed matchup in the CAC Semifinals next Wednesday, November 1 with game time to be determined.
