CNU Women's Soccer Moves Up to No. 8 Nationally; Captains Travel to Salisbury University Wednesday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- After running their unbeaten regular season record to 13-0-1 this week, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team moved up one spot in this week's United Soccer Coaches Top 25, listed at No. 8 in the nation. The Captains will look to continue their hot streak on Wednesday as they hit the road for a first-place showdown in league play as they face Salisbury University at 3:00 pm in Capital Athletic Conference action.

On Tuesday afternoon, the United Soccer Coaches poll was released with Christopher Newport moving up to eighth nationally, while the Captains also moved up to No. 5 in the D3soccer.com Top 25. CNU is one of only eight teams in the nation who hasn't lost yet this season, boasting a 13-0-1 overall and 6-0-0 conference record.

The Captains carry an 11-game winning streak into the contest on Wednesday against the Sea Gulls. Salisbury is now 8-7-0 with a matching 6-0-0 record in league play as the game pits the two remaining undefeated teams in the CAC against eachother. The Sea Gulls have yet to allow a goal in conference play, outscoring opponents 11-0, while CNU has outscored their league foes 23-1.

Wednesday afternoon's action also pits reigning CAC Co-Defensive Players of the Week against eachother as Salisbury's goalkeeper Hope Knussman and CNU's senior netminder Carly Maglio will do battle. Both pitched a pair of shutouts with four saves last week to net the league's weekly honor. Maglio is the Captains' all-time leader in wins and is tied for the career shutout mark with 23 career clean sheets.

In support of the tremendous Captains defense that has allowed just nine goals all year, the offense has been chugging along at a record-breaking pace. CNU has scored 49 goals and currently ranks third all-time in program history with 9.57 points per game. Freshman Riley Cook has led the way,  and leads the league in scoring with 28 points. Fellow rookie Maxine Borris is tied for the league lead with five assists, while junior Gabby Gillis is tied for second in the league with 23 points.

Salisbury had a shaky start to the year that saw the Sea Gulls open just 1-6-0 overall, but have since turned the corner and have won seven of their last eight games. That includes a run of five straight shutouts in conference play, outscoring opponents 10-0. Offensively, senior Ruthie Lucas leads the way with eight goals and two assists as the only double-digit scorer for the Gulls. Sophomore Julianna Boller has added four goals and an assist as well. Defensively Knussman has started 14 games and has registered a 1.19 GAA with a .761 save percentage.

For fans who can not attend the game in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available courtesy of the Salisbury University Department of Athletics. Links can be found on the women's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.

Following Wednesday's road trip, the Captains will travel to Mary Washington for the final road game of the regular season on Saturday, October 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
