NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Despite being held to just one goal for only the third time this season, the 9th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team rolled to its 11th straight win on Saturday night, downing Penn State Harrisburg, 1-0.  The Captains improved to 13-0-1 with a perfect 6-0-0 record in conference play, clinching a spot in this year's CAC Tournament.

After celebrating the careers of the 2017 Senior Class, the Captains celebrated another victory on their home field Saturday night, improving to 7-0-0 at Captains Field. The setback dropped Penn State Harrisburg to 10-5-0, 3-3-0.

The victory was courtesy of another dominating effort on both sides of the ball as Christopher Newport outshot the Lions, 34-4, and picked up their third straight shutout. Despite only scoring once, the Captains put 17 shots on-goal and challenged the Lions defense all night long.

The lone tally of the game would come in the 28th minute of action when junior Gabby Gillis set up rookie Maxine Borris for the score. Gillis saw a seam in the middle of the Penn State Harrisburg defense and caught Borris streaking down the field for an open look in the box. The freshman made sure it would count as she deposited a hard shot into the left side of the goal.

Borris' fourth goal of the season would hold up as her second game-winning strike. Gillis picked up her fifth assist, tied for the team lead, and now has 23 points in her junior campaign.

The Captains had a 17-1 advantage in shots in the first half, but were unable to pull away. CNU appeared to add to the lead in the 77th minute off a corner kick by Carson Pokorny, when Gillis headed a shot into the right side of the netting. A teammate was whistled for being offsides, however, and the goal was nullified.

With the game still tight on the scoreboard, a dynamite defensive play would prove to be the difference for the Captains in the victory. In the 80th minute of action, a run by Penn State Harrisburg's leading scorer, Kristen Stark, set the Lion's senior free on the right side. From just outside of the box she blistered a hard shot to the left, but CNU's senior goalkeeper Carly Maglio made a full-extension diving save to deny the attempt.

As CNU peppered the Lions defense with shots, goalkeeper Kayla Arnold had a stellar day in goal for the Lions.  She made 16 saves and allowed just one goal to one of the nation's top offensive units.

Following the win, the Captains will now hit the road to take on Salisbury University on Wednesday, October 18.  Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
