SALISBURY, Md. -- In a battle of the only two remaining undefeated teams in the Capital Athletic Conference, the 8th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team took control of the top of the standings with a 2-0 shutout at Salisbury University on Wednesday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper
Carly Maglio made a pair of saves en route to her 24th career shutout, breaking the program record.Â
The Captains picked up their fourth straight shutout and 12th straight victory, improving to 14-0-1 overall and 7-0-0 in league play. A pair of second-half goals would prove to be the difference in the league matchup, as CNU got goals from
Logan Montel and
Gabby Gillis.
Controlling the offensive action for the duration of the first half, the Captains had several narrow misses as Maglio's counterpart, Hope Knussman, made five saves in the opening stanza. Knussman came into the contest with a shutout streak of over 400 minutes and extended that run to just over 450 before the Captains cashed in on the first goal of the game.Â
Just five minutes into the second half, CNU connected on a corner kick goal as sophomore
Carson Pokorny found classmate
Logan Montel for the score. Montel redirected the cross into the right side of the goal for what would hold up as the game-winning goal.Â
In the 66th minute of action, Christopher Newport would tack on an insurance goal behind their second leading scorer,
Gabby Gillis. Rookie
Maddie Cochran found Gillis onsides and the junior midfielder made a nice move to cut back on a defender before slamming a shot off the right post and in. Gillis notched her 10th goal of the season and continues to add to a stellar third year campaign with 25 points.
CNU outshot the Sea Gulls, 19-9, and put six shots on frame versus just a pair for the home team. Maglio and the Captains defense pitched their eighth shutout of the season and lowered the team's goals-against average to 0.59 for the season. Maglio, with six solo shutouts this year, breaks
Erin Wojtkun's career shutouts record with 24 career clean sheets. She has a 0.52 GAA and an .837 save percentage on 93 shots faced.Â
With the setback, Salisbury falls to 8-8-0, 6-1-0 in the CAC.Â
Christopher Newport will return to action with another road game on Saturday, October 21 as they travel to Mary Washington for a 1:00 pm kickoff.Â
