ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- On Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 pm, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will look to add to it's eight-game winning streak as they travel to St. Mary's College of Maryland for Capital Athletic Conference action.
The Captains (9-2-0, 4-0-0) will be taking on a Seahawks club that is also riding a win streak as St. Mary's (8-4-0, 4-0-0) has won five straight entering Wednesday's tilt. Last season, the two teams played to a 2-2 draw in Newport News as the only tie of the year for CNU. The matchup favors CNU by an all-time 15-5-2 record in the series, which dates back to 1977.
For fans unable to make the trek to St. Mary's City, a live video webcast and live stats will be availble from the opening kickoff. Links to both can be found on the men's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.
This season, the Captains feature the nation's leading offense averaging 4.55 goals per game. The 61 goals scored already matches last season's total and is the second most scored in a season in the last six years. The offense is on a record-breaking pace with five games remaining in the regular season and strong positioning for a CAC Tournament berth looming.
Leading the offense is senior
Jimmy Grace, scoring 23 points on 10 goals and three assists. Five Captains have scored at least 10 points already this season with
Stephen Durbin's 19 (8 goals, 3 assists) and
Andrew Gogolin's 15 (6 goals, 3 assists) highlighting the last two week's performance. Both players earned CAC Offensive Player of the Week honors in the last two weeks.
Defensively, the Captains have been incredibly stingy in the opening half this season, allowing just three goals. Conversely, the offense has scored 30 goals in the opening stanza as CNU has raced out to big leads early.
St. Mary's (Md.) comes in winners of five straight games while featuring a tough defensive unit. As a team, the Seahawks have six shutouts in 12 games, and boast a 0.92 goals against average this year. Senior goalkeeper Zack Haussler has started eight games and has an .852 save percentage with a 0.50 goals against average.
Following Wednesday afternoon's matchup, CNU will return to Captains Field on Saturday, October 14 to host Penn State Harrisburg at 7:00 pm.
