Sixth-Ranked Captains Outlast Wesley, 71-62, in CAC Road Battle

DOVER, Del. - Christopher Newport held off a stubborn challenge from Wesley College Wednesday night as the Captains improved to 10-2 with a 71-62 victory. CNU, ranked sixth in the country this week, is now 4-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference thanks to the road triumph at Wentworth Gymnasium.

"They're always a tough team to beat on their home court," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "I thought we did enough good things to win the game. This is a tough conference, and winning games on the road is always a challenge. It says a lot about us that we were able to tough it out and get the win."

Senior guards Rayshard Brown and Kevin Regimbal led the scoring column, as Brown posted a season-high 16 and Regimbal added 15. Senior Tim Daly scored 14 points and was one of four Captains to record four rebounds.

After a back-and forth first half, the Captains were able to build a 12-point lead at the half thanks to a 15-0 run to end the half. CNU jumped out to a 17-point lead, 43-26, early in the second half before the Wolverines surged back into the game.

The Captains, who have now won seven straight games over Wesley, were propelled in part by 8 of 18 shooting from three-point range. Regimbal drained four threes, while Brown knocked down three triples.

Wesley, now 5-7 overall and 3-2 in the CAC, twice cut the lead to six in the second half only to have the Captains bounce back and take charge.

CNU's stingy defense held the Wolverines to 38 percent shooting for the game (21 of 55). The Captains are currently second in the country in field goal percentage defense.

The Captains made 26 of 54 shots for 48 percent for the night, but were out-rebounded by Wesley, 42-25.

Two of Christopher Newport's key contributors, juniors Marcus Carter and Aaron McFarland, battled despite being under the weather. Carter, who also suffered a sprained wrist in the second half, was held to seven points and is now just 11 points away from 1,000 for his career. He is trying to become the 31st player in CNU history to reach the plateau, and the second this season. Senior Tim Daly joined the 1,000 point club in December.

"I thought a lot of guys stepped up and gave us good minutes," Krikorian continued. "Luther Gibbs and Cutch Ellis both made some big plays and really helped us in key times."

Gibbs (four points, four rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals in 23 minutes played) and Ellis (six points, four rebounds and one assist in ten minutes of action) are both freshmen.

Another freshman, Brian Cameron, led Wesley with 25 points that included four three-point field goals.

Christopher Newport remains in a second-place tie in the CAC standings behind league-leader Salisbury. The Captains return to action on Saturday with another road contest. CNU travels to Arlington, Va., to take on the Saints of Marymount University. Tipoff time is set for 3:00 p.m. at Verizon Sports Arena.
