ARLINGTON, Va. - Christopher Newport broke open a tight game in the second half Sunday, racing to a 70-57 triumph at Marymount University. The Captains, ranked sixth in the nation last week, are now 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference following the victory at Verizon Sports Arena.
Junior
Aaron McFarland led the way with 21 points in just 22 minutes played. McFarland made five three-point shots in eight attempts.
Senior
Tim Daly spurred the Captains in the second half, scoring all 15 of his points after halftime, with ten coming in a four-minute span that saw CNU surge ahead for good.
"We had a lot of guys step up tonight when we really needed a lift," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "Marymount is a very good defensive squad, and really made it tough for us."
After falling behind 8-2 in the early-going, CNU bounced back and held a one-point lead at halftime, 29-28, The back-and-forth battle continued until the Captains went on a 12-0 run to break open a 44-44 game and surge to a 56-44 lead. The Saints could never recover as CNU cruised to the 13-point victory.
Daly was key during the four-minute barrage, including a sequence that saw him score three straight CNU buckets. The senior big man made five straight attempts during the second stanza and finished the game five-of-eight from the field, five of six from the foul line, and also pulled down seven rebounds.

Justin Hampton sank three triples for nine points, and freshman
Luther Gibbs came off the bench to post eight.
Christopher Newport struggled from the field in the first half, making just 11 of 37 attempts for 30 percent. The Captains recovered by making 14 of 28 in the second half to finish at 39 percent for the day. The Captains posted a 36-35 rebound advantage, and knocked down nine three-pointers to Marymount's two.
CNU's defense, second in the country in points allowed per game, gave up just 57 while holding the Saints to 40 percent shooting for the day and forcing 15 turnovers. Marymount, now 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the CAC, was led by 14 points from Brandon Rogers and 13 from Dmitri Rucker.
Junior All-American
Marcus Carter was held to four points, and now is seven shy of 1,000 for his career.
The hard-fought win leaves the Captains alone in second place in the CAC standings behind only Salisbury.
The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was moved to Sunday due to wintry weather conditions. Christopher Newport returns home for a Wednesday night game at the Freeman Center against St. Mary's. Tipoff time is set for 7:30 p.m.
