NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport men's and women's basketball teams will hit the road for the third straight weekend, playing a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Frostburg, Md., against the Bobcats of Frostburg State University. The women's game begins at 1:00 p.m. followed by the men's tilt at 3:00 p.m.
Both Christopher Newport squads remain in the Top 10 and are coming off home victories Wednesday night over Mary Washington at the Freeman Center.
The CNU women are now 16-0 and 9-0 atop the Capital Athletic Conference. It's just the second time in program history the Captains have won their first 16 games, and
Bill Broderick's team is ranked sixth in the country. CNU's triumph over Mary Washington came in a battle for first place in the CAC, as the Eagles were also undefeated heading into the matchup. The CNU victory gave the Captains sole possession of first place heading into the second half of the conference schedule. Junior
Makenzie Fancher led the Captains Wednesday night scoring a season-high 20 points in CNU's 75-67 win.
CNU defeated Frostburg State, 81-51, on December 3rd when the teams met at the Freeman Center. The victory at the time gave the Captains a 6-0 record, and also marked the 100th win for Broderick at CNU. Junior
Sam Porter led the Captains in the initial meeting, scoring 20 points.
Frostburg State is 6-10 on the season and the Bobcats are 4-5 in the CAC entering Saturday's play.
On the men's side,
John Krikorian's squad is ranked third in the country and coming off an 81-65 victory over Mary Washington on Wednesday. Senior Kevin Regimbal led the attack matching a career high with 18 points on six three-point field goals. CNU is now 14-2 overall and tied with Salisbury at 8-1 atop the CAC.
Wednesday's win for the men marked the 20th straight home victory at the Freeman Center dating back to December of 2015.
The Captains won the first game with Frostburg State on December 3rd at the Freeman Center, 62-53. Junior Marcus Carter led the way with 13 points for CNU.
Frostburg State's men's squad is 4-12 overall and 3-6 in the CAC, but the Bobcats have won their last two games.
Saturday's men's game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) beginning at 2:40 with the pre-game show from Bobcat Arena.
