MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Christopher Newport used a 12-0 second-half run Saturday to pull away from Penn State-Harrisburg. The Captains, ranked fourth in the nation, were led by
Marcus Carter's 17 points as they posted their sixth straight victory, 73-55, at Capital Union Building.
Christopher Newport also got big contributions from seniors
Tim Daly (15 points and eight rebounds),
Rayshard Brown (15 points, five rebounds and three assists), and
Kevin Regimbal (12 points, five rebounds and two steals).
"We really needed our seniors to step up, and they really did in the second half," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "Penn State-Harrisburg plays a very physical brand of basketball, and it can wear you down. I thought our effort was really good."
The Captains opened up a back-and-forth first half and grabbed a seven-point lead at halftime, 30-23. The Lions battled back and cut the advantage to three, 51-48, with 7:28 to play. From there, CNU closed the game on a 22-7 run, including the 12-0 sequence, to record the 18-point triumph.
CNU improved to 13-2 overall and is now tied atop the league standings with Salisbury at 7-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference. York handed Salisbury its first league loss of the season on Saturday.
Carter, who joined the 1,000-point club at CNU on Wednesday night, made six of nine shots and also hauled in seven rebounds. He now has 1,021 career points, and became the 31st player in the 50-year history of CNU men's basketball to reach the plateau.
The Captains shot 61 percent from the floor in the second half (11 of 18), and out-rebounded the Lions, 38-34, for the day.
CNU's outstanding defense held an opponent to 60 points or less for the 13th time this year in 15 games. The Captains are currently second in the country in field goal percentage defense and points allowed per game.
A total of 53 fouls were called in the game, and the teams combined to shoot 61 foul shots.
Penn State-Harrisburg is now 6-9 for the season, and 3-5 in the CAC. The Lions were led by 12 points from Kahlil Williams. Christopher Newport has now won six straight in the series with Penn State-Harrisburg, and has a 6-1 lead in seven all-time meetings.
Christopher Newport returns to action on Wednesday, as the Captains host the Eagles of Mary Washington at the Freeman Center. Tipoff time is set for 7:30 p.m.
