Third-Ranked Captains Stretch Winning Streak to Seven...CNU Downs Mary Washington, 81-65

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport knocked down seven three-point field goals in the second half Wednesday night, and 11 for the game, en route to an 81-65 victory over Mary Washington. The Capital Athletic Conference triumph was the 20th in a row at the Freeman Center for the third-ranked Captains, and the seventh straight since returning from holiday break.

CNU held a 41-32 advantage at halftime, and saw the Eagles cut the lead as close as four in the second half, 52-48, with 12:16 to play. The Captains caught fire from long range and went on a 16-2 run while opening a 68-50 lead. Christopher Newport out-scored the Eagles, 29-17, over the final dozen minutes to cruise to the 16-point victory.

"Mary Washington has a lot of talent and I thought our defense did a really good job minimizing their impact," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "Again we had a lot of guys stepping up and leading the way for us."

Senior guard Kevin Regimbal was at the front for CNU, scoring a game-high 18 points on six three-point field goals. Regimbal connected from distance three times in each half, and finished the game six of 12 from beyond the arc. His 18 points matches a career high.

Senior middle man Tim Daly also had a big night, scoring 16 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Freshmen Luther Gibbs (14) and Savonte Chappell (11) also reached double figures off the bench for the Captains.

CNU is now 14-2 overall and 8-1 in CAC play. The Captains remain tied with Salisbury at 8-1 at the top of the conference standings thanks to the Sea Gulls two-point victory over Wesley.

The Captains shot 47.5 percent for the game (29 of 61) and made 11 of 23 (47.8 percent) from long range. CNU out-rebounded UMW, 44-35, with junior Marcus Carter leading the way on the boards with 11 for the night. Carter also contributed eight points.

CNU's stingy defense, ranked second in the country in points allowed and opponent field goal percentage, held the Eagles to just 34.4 percent shooting for the night (22 of 64).

Mary Washington is now 8-8 overall and 4-5 in the CAC. Freshman A.J. Robinson led the Eagles with 11, while junior Eric Shaw, who averages 17 points per game, was held to ten.

CNU hasn't lost at the Freeman Center since December 30, 2015, and the Captains are now 9-0 at home this season. Christopher Newport posted a perfect 16-0 record at home during the calendar year 2016.

The Captains now hold a 24-6 lead in the all-time series with Mary Washington. The teams will meet again on February 1st in Fredericksburg.

Christopher Newport returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Frostburg, MD., to take on the Bobcats of Frostburg State University. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. CNU defeated FSU at the Freeman Center back on December 3rd, 62-53, in the first meeting of the schools this season.
