Nationally-Ranked Captains Travel to Keystone State for Saturday Basketball Doubleheader

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport's Top 10 basketball programs hit the road again this weekend, travelling to Pennsylvania for Saturday action in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Captains will play the Lions of Penn State-Harrisburg in Middletown, Pa., with the women's game starting at 1:00 p.m. followed by the men's action at 3:00 p.m.

The CNU women are undefeated and ranked sixth in the country. Bill Broderick's team is 14-0 overall and 7-0 atop the CAC.

The men's team is riding a five-game winning streak and ranked fourth in the nation. John Krikorian's crew is 12-2 overall and 6-1 in league play.

Both squads are coming off victories Wednesday night over St. Mary's (MD) at the Freeman Center. The women defeated the Seahawks, 80-44, and the men held off St. Mary's, coming from behind for a 68-60 victory.

The CNU women extended their season-opening winning streak to 14, marking just the second time in program history the Captains have been 14-0. The 2009-2010 women's team won its first 30 games before losing in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

The Captains will battle a Penn State-Harrisburg squad that is 3-11 overall and 1-6 in the CAC. The Lions have dropped their last two games to Mary Washington and Wesley.

On the men's side, the Captains will take on a Penn State-Harrisburg team that is 6-8 overall and 3-4 in conference action. The Lions are coming off a buzzer-beating 73-70 road win at Wesley Wednesday night.

CNU's Marcus Carter joined the 1,000-point club in Wednesday night's triumph. Carter, a junior All-American from Williamsburg, became the 31st player in the 50-year history of men's basketball to reach the plateau. He joined teammate Tim Daly, who hit the 1,000-point mark in December and has now scored 1,072 for his career.

Live video of both games will be available at CNUsports.com/live. The men's game will also be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 2:40 p.m.
