Undefeated and 22nd-Ranked CNU Football Travels to Rowan for Saturday Night Showdown

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Riding a seven-game winning streak dating back to last season, the Christopher Newport football team hits the road again this weekend for New Jersey Athletic Conference action. The Captains, 4-0 overall and 3-0 atop the NJAC standings, take on the Profs of Rowan University Saturday night in Glassboro, N.J. Kickoff at Richard Wackar Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

CNU played in the Garden State last Saturday, shutting out the College of New Jersey, 17-0. It was the first shutout for Christopher Newport since the 2007 season, and the eighth in program history. The road triumph matched CNU's win total from a year ago when the Captains finished the season with a 4-6 mark thanks to three straight wins to end the season.

Now, it's back to Jersey as the Captains hit the halfway point of the 2016 campaign.

"Rowan is a big and talented football team that is coming off a tough loss last week," Head Coach Matt Kelchner said. "I know they will give us all we can handle. We've worked hard this week to prepare for them and we're going to have to execute to be successful."

The Profs are 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the NJAC following a 21-14 defeat last Saturday at Montclair State. Rowan lost the game in the final quarter as the Red Hawks pulled out the victory in the final minute of action. CNU and Rowan will be meeting for the eighth time, with the Profs holding a 6-1 series lead. Last year at POMOCO Stadium, Rowan scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to beat the Captains, 14-9.

The showdown will feature the NJAC's top passing attack (CNU) against the leading defense against the pass (Rowan). Junior quarterback K.J. Kearney has thrown for seven scores with just one interception through the first four weeks.

Christopher Newport's defense has scored four times in as many games, with three interceptions returned for touchdowns as well as a safety.

The Captains moved up to 22nd this week in the national poll from D3football.com. CNU is 24th-ranked in the country in the national coaches poll.

Following Saturday's action, Christopher Newport will have a bye week before returning home on October 15th to face Montclair State in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. The game will be a part of Family Weekend at CNU.

Saturday's game at Rowan will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 5:30 p.m.
