Undefeated and 24th-Ranked Captains Travel to New Jersey Looking For Fourth Straight Victory

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport football team faces a tough stretch, hitting the road for back-to-back New Jersey Athletic Conference battles...in New Jersey. Saturday outside of Trenton in Ewing, New Jersey, the 24th-ranked and undefeated Captains take on the 0-2 Lions of the College of New Jersey. Kickoff is set for 12:00 noon.

The game will be followed by another road trip next Saturday, October 1st, as the Captains play at Rowan in Glassboro, N.J. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.

"Playing on the road obviously includes many different areas of preparation," Head Coach Matt Kelchner said. "We played pretty well in our win at Hampden-Sydney and now we have to continue that type of focus the next couple of weeks. You can never take a week off in this conference...everybody is capable of beating everybody else. I know TCNJ will be fired up, it's their first home game and Family Weekend there so we have to be ready to play."

The Captains are coming off an exciting home victory over 17th-ranked Wesley last Saturday night, 42-28. CNU improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 atop the New Jersey Athletic Conference with the win at POMOCO Stadium. It was Christopher Newport's first win ever over Wesley in four tries.

Saturday's tilt has special significance due to the fact that no CNU team in the 16-year history of the program has ever started the season with a 4-0 mark. This is the second time CNU has opened up with a 3-0 record.

The College of New Jersey is 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the NJAC. The Lions lost last Friday night at Kean, 16-7, in their last game. CNU and TCNJ opened the season last year at POMOCO Stadium, with the Captains posting a 31-21 triumph in the first NJAC game ever for CNU.

The Captains have been led by junior quarterback K.J. Kearney, who has won back-to-back offensive Player of the Week honors in the NJAC. Kearney has thrown 102 passes without an interception this season and has tossed six touchdown passes in the first three games. He has also run for three scores.

Saturday's game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 11:30 a.m.
