NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After falling behind for just the second time this season, the 11th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team bounced back quickly to down the DeSales University Bulldogs, 2-1. The Captains (5-1-0) got goals from
Allie McWilliams and
Kayla Locklear in the first half to erase a short deficit and come away with the win.
In the early portion of the first half, mistakes plagued the Captains as a red card in the 9th minute forced CNU into playing a man down for nearly the whole match. Then, the Captains found themselves in a 1-0 hole after a misplay led to a Bulldogs goal. Just 17 minutes into the game, a whistle blown against the Captains in the box gave the home team a prime opportunity with a free kick from the penalty spot. DeSales made good on the positioning and connected on a goal from Caroline Nealon to Jess Wetherhold.
After the early issues, the Captains would right the ship quickly, responding with the game-tying goal just under three minutes later. The rapid response came off the foot of McWilliams, connecting off a pass from fellow senior
Victoria Perry. Perry played a centering pass into McWilliams, who sprinted onsides unmarked and delivered the game-tying blow.
In total, the Captains have trailed for fewer than five minutes of game time this season, with just over two minutes against Virginia Wesleyan and under three minutes in today's matchup with the Bulldogs.
From there, the Captains would add a second goal in the first half to take a 2-1 edge. In a near identical play, rookie
Keiley McCarthy played a centering pass in for sophomore
Kayla Locklear, who again sprinted on unmarked. Locklear delivered her first goal of the season, which would hold up as the gamewinner.
After halftime, the two teams tangled with relatively little action on-frame. CNU goalkeeper
Carly Maglio made four saves after halftime, including a pair on back-to-back attempts in the 61st minute. Erin Crystal attempted a 30-yard shot headed for the upper 90, but Maglio tracked it and punched it away. Angelica Bertola got the rebound and made another stab at the equalizer, but Maglio collected her shot to secure the lead.
In the game, both teams managed nine total shots with DeSales holding a slight 6-4 edge in shots on-goal. CNU took 5 corner kicks while the hosts managed just two.
The Captains will stay out on the road as they travel to New Jersey to face Rutgers-Newark on Monday, September 19 at 5:00 pm.
