CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Following their first setback of the season, the 11th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team will look to bounce back on the road this weekend, traveling to face DeSales University (4-2-0) on Saturday, September 17 at 2:00 pm. CNU is off to a 4-1 start and earned the program's first NSCAA national ranking since the 2007 season.
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com, or via the schedule at DeSales athletics website, athletics.desales.edu.
After racing out to four straight wins for just the second time in program history, Christopher Newport suffered a 1-0 loss to Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night. The Marlins scored with just over two minutes remaining to stun the nationally-ranked Captains.
CNU is still outscoring opponents, 13-2, for the season, and boasts a strong defensive unit paired with a dangerous attack. Junior goalkeeper
Carly Maglio has a 0.40 goals-against average through the first five games, while saving nearly 91% of shots faced. Her back line has consisted of rookies
Keiley McCarthy,
Shaye Doherty, juniors
Kira Warner,
Danielle Pratt, and sophomore
Lauren Ciccone. The group has allowed just 7.6 shots per game, with only 4.1 coming on-frame.
Offensively, rookie
Carson Pokorny and senior
Victoria Perry have done the most damage, combining for six goals and five assists thus far. The duo also have combined for three of the first four game-winning goals this season for CNU.
The Captains will face a DeSales program that has also been very dangerous offensively this season. The Bulldogs are 4-2 with multiple goals scored in all but one game this season, including a pair of 7-0 shutouts. The team is averaging 4.0 goals per game, led by Angelica Bertola with 17 points already this season. Bertola has eight goals and one assist while taking nearly 25% of the teams total shots.
Following the game on Saturday, the Captains will head to New Jersey for a Monday matchup at Rutgers-Newark. That game will kickoff at 5:00 pm on Monday evening, wrapping up the quick two-game road trip.
