REDLANDS, Calif. -- A pair of nationally-ranked programs will put their undefeated records on the line Friday evening, as the 8th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team travels across the country to face 11th-ranked Redlands at 5:00 (PST) / 8:00 (EST) p.m. Live video and live stats will be available for fans on the East Coast, with links found at CNUsports.com or via the Redlands athletics website.
The Captains and Bulldogs have each opened the season 5-0, with impressive marks to start the year. CNU has picked up four straight shutouts and is outscoring opponents 22-2, while Redlands has three clean sheets and is outscoring their first five foes by a count of 17-3.
CNU and Redlands have never faced eachother, but the two programs have followed similar ascents into the national soccer scene over the last 15 years. Since the 2000 season, the two teams have combined for 18 NCAA Tournament appearances with 501 total wins (an average of nearly 16 wins per year). Both teams made big jumps in the first NSCAA Top 25 release of the regular season, with CNU vaulting to No. 8 and Redlands moving up to No. 11.
The Captains will lean on a balanced offense that has seen 11 different players factor into the goal scoring this season, including eight players with multiple goals already. Sophomore
Stephen Durbin leads the way with 10 points on four goals and two assists, but contributions have come from up and down the CNU lineup with veterans and newcomers alike chipping in.
Defensively, senior
Harry Nodwell and sophomore
Bobby Seifert have been the anchors to a stingy back line that includes junior
Zach Douglass and senior
Sammy Blosser. The starting foursome has allowed just two goals all season and just over three shots on-goal per game. In goal, sophomore
Zach Pedini has done the lion's share of the work, earning three solo shutouts and another combined effort. Pedini has a 0.22 goals-against average with one goal allowed in over 400 minutes played.
CNU will be facing a team more talented than any on their schedule thus far, featuring a dynamic scorer in junior Chase Boone and a veteran defense with four of five spots filled by upperclassmen. Boone has taken 24 shots, putting 19 on-frame and scoring five times already this season. The junior leads the team in scoring with 13 points while factoring into eight of the team's first 17 goals.
Defensively, senior Austin Moore plays with juniors Keoni Yates, Ben Thompson, and sophomore Arman Mogharei on the back line, limiting opponents to just three goals scored this season. In goal, junior Josh Haskill has been the full-time starter for the Bulldogs all three years of his career, boasting an impressive 0.94 career goals-against average and 78.2% career save percentage. This season, Haskill has a 0.62 GAA with a pair of shutouts.
Following the action Friday night, the Christopher Newport men's team will take a day off before traveling to face Chapman University on Sunday, September 18. The matchup with the Panthers will begin at 1:00 pm locally, 4:00 pm eastern.
