NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Following a two-game road trip, the 14th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will return home for a pair of games this week beginning with a showdown against Randolph-Macon on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Captains Turf Field.

Entering the contest, the Captains boast a 4-0 record and remain 14th in the latest NFHCA Coaches Poll, which was released on Tuesday afternoon. Meanwhile, Randolph-Macon comes in at 1-4.

For those fans unable to make it to Wednesday's game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.

A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS

Christopher Newport boasts a solid defensive unit, which has surrendered just three total goals in the first four games of the 2016 campaign. Incredibly, CNU's opposition has combined to register just 14 shots and nine penalty corners this year.

On an individual level, Brittan Muir and Sarah Miller have both earned the CAC Defensive Player of the Week award this season. Muir was the year's first honoree after leading CNU to a pair of shutouts while registering two assists against Oberlin and Goucher. Meanwhile, Miller secured this week's honor after notching two defensive saves over the weekend while helping Christopher Newport upend Centre and DePauw.

Along with the decorated defenders, Bailey Lien sports a 0.92 goals-against-average and a .700 save percentage. Junior Mackenzie Neylon and freshman Rachel Cooke have also started all four games and been stalwarts on the defensive side of the ball.

LAST TIME OUT

Over the weekend, the Captains registered a 3-2 overtime victory against Centre and a 2-1 triumph over DePauw. Rachael Allshouse led the way on Friday as the sophomore posted a pair of goals, including the clincher in overtime. Meanwhile, Abby Cryts added the game-winner on Sunday against the Tigers after Kana Hashigami opened the scoring in the first half.

Not surprisingly, the defense also excelled during the two games. Muir and Miller combined for three defensive saves, while Lien notched seven stops between the pipes.

SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS

Randolph-Macon is led by first-year head coach and longtime CNU assistant Jessica Weiss. Before taking over the Yellow Jackets this season, she spent seven years on the sidelines at Captains Turf Field and helped Christopher Newport advance to the NCAA Tournament five times.

Weiss' squad opened the year with a double-overtime victory against Oberlin before dropping its last four decisions, including a pair against CAC members St. Mary's (Md.) and Frostburg State. So far this year, Skyler Seligman and Haley McMahon both have goals, while Kelsey Stanley and Katie Thompson have split time in the cage. Stanley leads the team with an .833 save percentage, while Thompson also has 32 stops during her time between the pipes.

SERIES HISTORY

CNU and Randolph-Macon have met 15 times with the Captains holding a pristine 15-0 record in the series. Last year, Christopher Newport picked up a 2-0 victory in Ashland as Lien came through with the shutout, while Carol Thompson and Alexa Weaver both scored.
