FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- With playoff positioning on the line, the 15th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will head to 14th-ranked Mary Washington on Wednesday at 4 p.m. for a crucial Capital Athletic Conference match-up at the Battleground Complex.
Entering the final week of the regular season, CNU currently sits in second place in the league standings, while Mary Washington is in a tie for third. Overall, the Captains stand at 11-2 on the season with a 5-1 record in league action. The Eagles are 11-3 with a 4-2 mark against CAC foes.

A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS After splitting a pair of games last week, Christopher Newport remains among the national leaders in a variety of categories. The Captains are still second in the country in free-position percentage with a .597 conversion rate. The squad also sits 11th in the NCAA in scoring offense (15.08), 13th in save percentage (.549), 14th in scoring margin (7.69), and 17th in draw-controls-per-game (14.31).
On an individual level,
Meaghan Galvin is second in the nation with a .929 free-position percentage as the junior standout has converted 13 of her 14 eight-meter shots. She also ranks first in the CAC with 68 points and 75 draw controls. Meanwhile, on the defensive end,
Emma Walsh is 15th in the country - and third among freshmen - with a .558 save percentage. Her 106 total stops also rank 25th in the country.
Along with the national leaders,
Mariah Ginebra continues to rank among the top defenders in the CAC with 17 caused turnovers and 27 ground balls.
Sarah Culver is also fourth in the league with 35 goals, while
Catie Chess is sixth with 34.
LAST TIME OUT On Saturday, Christopher Newport took down Marymount, 16-9, in Arlington. Against the Saints, Galvin registered a game-high eight points, while Chess scored four times. Culver also contributed her seventh hat-trick of the season, and
Colleen Bourgal added a pair of goals. On the defensive end, Walsh made six saves to earn the victory, and both Chess and
Hunter Van Reenan forced a pair of turnovers.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES Mary Washington features standout performers all over the field as Kristen Littlefield leads the CAC with 24 caused turnovers, while Mackenzie Maguire is tied for the top spot with 36 goals. Meanwhile, Emily Mott is sixth in the league with 18 assists, and Paige Childers is fifth with 36 draw controls.
Along with the elite conference performers, the Eagles feature five players who have at least 25 points this season, including Ashlyn Dacey, who scored five times in her last outing against St. Mary's (Md.) on Thursday. Hanna Ashby and Kelsey Welsh have split time between the pipes as the two goalies have combined for a .424 save percentage and a 7.29 goals-against-average.
SERIES HISTORY UMW and CNU have met 14 times with the Eagles holding a 13-1 edge in the all-time series. Last season, Christopher Newport picked up its first win against Mary Washington with a 15-12 triumph during the regular season. The Eagles retaliated in the postseason with an 11-10 victory during the first round of the CAC Tournament.
