NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In their first appearance against conference opponents this season, the 29th-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team rolled to a pair of victories at home, dropping Frostburg State, 6-0, and Southern Virginia, 9-0. The Captains improved to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in league play.
The match against Frostburg State was shortened due to weather concerns and moving the match indoors to the Centre Court Racquet Club. The Bobcats fall to 1-6 overall, 0-2 against the CAC, while Southern Virginia is now 4-6, 0-3.
Against Frostburg State, the Captains surged to a 3-0 lead in doubles while dropping just two games.
Chiraag Shetty and
Steven Boslet won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, taking down Arun Pant and Teron Tyre, while
David Reed and
Justin Cerny dropped Marcus Bowers and Shasta Braithwaite, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, senior
Chiraag Shetty won easily at No. 1 singles, dropping Braithwaite by a final score of 6-1, 6-0, while
Arttu Fiva and
Michael Dodd added the other two singles wins before the match was called.
In the second match of the day, the Captains again took a 3-0 lead after doubles. Reed switched partners at No. 2, playing with Dodd, and captured an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.
William Trang and
Arttu Fiva added an 8-1 win at No. 3 against Dallin Evans and Josh Mickelsen.
In singles action, the Captains had little trouble disposing of the Knights, earning 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 1 and 6, while dropping just eight games in the other four matches combined. Rookie
William Trang made his collegiate dual singles debut, dropping Kjell Henness at No. 6.
Christopher Newport will host St. Mary's (Md.) on Sunday, March 20. The originally scheduled match against the Seahawks was moved to Newport News due to poor weather expected in St. Mary's City, Md. The match will begin at 1:00 pm.
