LEXINGTON, Va. -- This Valentine's Day, the 37th-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team has a date with their second straight nationally-ranked opponent to start the season, traveling to 32nd-ranked Washington & Lee for non-conference action. The first road trip of the year will pit the two regional rivals against eachother at 2:00 pm.
The two teams are ranked back-to-back in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic South Regional Rankings, with W&L collecting a pre-season ranking of 8th and the Captains currently 9th in the team poll. CNU already toppled a nationally-ranked team this season, defeating No. 22 North Carolina Wesleyan, 7-2, last weekend, while Washington & Lee will open the season on Sunday against Randolph-Macon prior to the match with CNU.Â
In the win over the Battling Bishops, CNU was led by sophomore
Justin Cerny, who with partner
David Reed did not surrender a point in No. 1 doubles before going on to win the match-clinching point in three sets at No. 2 singles. Reed also won at No. 1 singles and the Captains swept the top three positions as
Steven Boslet captured a win at No. 3 singles.Â
Washington & Lee is led by Michael Holt, ranked 12th in the region in Singles. The 6-3 senior won nine matches last season, including six at the No. 1 position. Last season, the Generals captured a 6-3 win over the Captains en route to a 15-9 overall record and appearance in the NCAA Tournament.Â
Full scores and a recap will be available following Sunday's action.Â
