The teams have recorded a combined record of 39-3, and neither has lost a game since the start of the new year. Wednesday night at the Freeman Center, they will host Mary Washington in a doubleheader with the women's game starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's tipoff at approximately 7:30 p.m.
While the CNU men have already clinched the Capital Athletic Conference's regular-season title, the women have more work to do. Both squads have four games left, and three of the four will be in the friendly confines of the Freeman Center.
Bill Broderick's women's squad is currently tied for second place in the CAC standings with Mary Washington at 12-2, a game behind league leader Marymount. CNU is 19-2 overall and has won 14 straight games, and the Captains are ranked 18th and 19th in two national polls released this week. Christopher Newport's remaining schedule features crucial matchups with Mary Washington, York, St. Mary's and Marymount, with each game bearing heavily on the conference standings.
CNU defeated Mary Washington in Fredericksburg on January 13th, 58-48, in a defensive struggle that could again be repeated on Wednesday night. The Captains surged to the road victory thanks to a strong second half rally after only scoring 18 first half points.
Sophomore Sam Porter led the CNU attack in the first tangle with the Eagles, posting 13 points and 10 rebounds. Porter was named the CAC's Player of the Week on Monday after three solid performances for the Captains last week that included a near triple-double at Salisbury. She averaged 15.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 5.0 steals per game in the three road triumphs.
Mary Washington's women's squad enters play Wednesday night with an 18-3 overall mark as well as its 12-2 CAC record.
In the men's game, the Captains will look to extend an 11-game winning streak.
John Krikorian's squad is 20-1, and has already matched its win total from a season ago when CNU finished 20-8. The Captains are 14-0 atop the CAC, and ranked sixth in the nation for the second straight week.
The men's squad also won three road games last week, and junior
Tim Daly played a big role in the team's success. Daly posted 20 points and 10 rebounds in a victory at Frostburg State on Monday. On Wednesday, Daly knocked down two free throws with just one second left to force overtime at Salisbury. CNU went on to win and clinch the CAC's regular-season title thanks in large part to Daly's 21 points and dramatic foul shots. On Saturday, he added 21 more in another come-from-behind triumph at Wesley. Daly was named the CAC's Player of the Week for the second time this season for his efforts.
In the first meeting with Mary Washington in Fredericksburg on January 13th, CNU jumped out to a 20-2 lead in the first half and held off UMW, 80-62. The Eagles are 11-10 overall and 7-7 in the CAC.
Webcasts of the games will be available Wednesday night at CNUsports.com/live. The men's game will also be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 7:10 p.m.
