About No. 10/11 CNU Women's Basketball (6-0, 2-0)
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) moved Christopher Newport up to No. 10 in the nation this week, marking the first top ten designation for the program during the regular season since the 2011 team that made a run to the Final Four. This season, the Captains have been powered by a suffocating defense that has not allowed more than 51 points scored in any game, while forcing over 30 turnovers per game. The nationally-ranked Captains, also tabbed as the 11th best team by D3hoops.com, rank third in the nation in scoring margin, outscoring their first six opponents by an average of 34.2 points per game.
Both the Captains' scoring defense (47.3 ppg allowed) and scoring offense (81.5 ppg) are ranked 12th in the nation as CNU has shown balance on both ends of the floor. After her best performance of the season, junior Sam Porter is leading the team with 10.7 points per game, while adding 7.0 rebounds and nearly 4 steals per game. Sophomore Jessica Daguilh has also helped bolster a dominant front court, with 9.0 points and a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game.
About York College (Pa.) Women's Basketball (5-2, 1-1)
The Captains tough front court will be challenged against the Spartans, as York features one of the best front court players in the league in senior Sam Hruz. Hruz leads the league in rebounding (11.3 rpg) and blocked shots (21), while ranking second on the team in scoring with 10 points per game. Katie Wagner is the team's leading scorer, pouring in 12.3 points per game.
The Spartans, picked in a tie for third in the CAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, average over 14 three-point attempts per game and will come in facing the nation's top-ranked three-point defense, as CNU is allowing just 10.7% of long-range attempts to go in. Head coach Betsy Witman, in her 20th season, has one of the most veteran teams in the nation at her disposal, as the Spartans feature just one freshman and return all five starters from a year ago.
The Captains own a slim 6-5 advantage in the all-time series. The matchup favors CNU, 4-2, in the Freeman Center.
About No. 6 CNU Men's Basketball (5-1, 2-0)
CNU bumped back up to 6th nationally this week after going 2-0 in league play against Southern Virginia and Frostburg State. The Captains were challenged against the Bobcats before pulling away for a 62-53 win against the league foe. The Captains' home dominance over the last three seasons prevailed, as CNU now owns a 31-3 record at the Freeman Center dating back through the 2014-15 season.
Senior
Tim Daly continues his quest for 1,000 points on Sunday, needing just 14 points to reach the milestone. He is also climbing the all-time rebounding charts, ranking in the top 20 among active players with 633 career boards. Junior
Marcus Carter nearly posted a double-double in the win over Frostburg, scoring a team-high 13 points with nine rebounds. He is leading the team with 11.2 points per game, while ranking second in rebounding with 6.2 per game.
About York (Pa.) Men's Basketball (5-1, 2-0)
Coming off a home conference win against Mary Washington, 72-65, the Spartans have won three straight to run their overall record to 5-1. York's only loss came at Franklin & Marshall, while they have picked up three wins away from their home floor.
Matt Scamuffo and Dalton Myers provide the Spartans with a dangerous inside-out combo. Myers is a first team All-Conference selection inside, averaging 12.2 points per game while hauling in 4.5 rebounds per contest. Scamuffo is one of the league's leading scorers, averaging 15.8 points per game to pace the Spartans attack.
CNU owns a 7-1 advantage in the all-time series heading into this, the ninth matchup all-time. CNU has won seven straight.
