Captains Open Capital Athletic Conference Play with Wednesday Doubleheader vs. Southern Virginia

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's and women's basketball squads close out November Wednesday night by opening play in the Capital Athletic Conference. CNU will host the Knights of Southern Virginia University at the Freeman Center. The women's game will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the men's action at 7:30 p.m.

The CNU men's team is off to a 3-1 start, while the women are 4-0 entering play on Wednesday night. John Krikorian's men are currently ranked seventh in the nation in the weekly poll from D3hoops.com, while Bill Broderick's women are 11th in the National Coaches Poll and 13th in the D3hoops.com poll.

It will also be the first conference action for Southern Virginia. The SVU men are 2-2, while the women enter play Wednesday with a 2-3 mark.

The Christopher Newport men's squad is coming off a perfect 18-0 record in the CAC last season that saw the Captains capture both the regular and post-season titles en route to the program's first Final Four ever. The Captains are coming off a 76-56 victory Sunday afternoon at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. The win was the 200th career victory for Krikorian, who is in his 11th season as a head coach and seventh leading the Captains.

CNU's defense has again been stifling in the early season, and the Captains are allowing just 57 points per game. Junior Aaron McFarland tops the squad, averaging 12.5 points per game. Junior All-American Marcus Carter is scoring 11.5 points per contest so far, and senior Tim Daly is just 33 points away from becoming the 30th player in CNU history to score 1,000 career points.

CNU's women are off to dominant start, and the Captains have won their first four games by an average of 34 points per game. Christopher Newport is coming off a 93-40 triumph on Sunday at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. Broderick now has a record of 98-23 in his fifth season on the CNU bench.

Freshman Micah Maloney leads the women's squad in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game. The Captains have held their first four opponents to an average of just 46.8 points per game.

Wednesday's men's game will be broadcast on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 7:10 p.m. Both games of the doubleheader at the Freeman Center will be streamed live on CNUsports.com/live.

Tickets for the doubleheader will be available at the Freeman Center Ticket Office.
