CNU Men's Soccer Travels to Southern Virginia Wednesday for CAC Action

BUENA VISTA, Va. -- With kickoff scheduled for 7:00 pm, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will look to add to its winning streak on Wednesday night, traveling to Southern Virginia University for Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Captains (9-2-0, 2-0-0) have won three in a row, including their first two league games of the season. After starting the year 2-2 through their first four games, the Knights have lost six in a row and come into tonight's contest with a 2-8-0 overall record, 0-2-0 in CAC play.

In three previous matchups between the two programs, Christopher Newport is 3-0-0 with a +17 goal differential. Last season, playing in Buena Vista, the Captains came away with a 3-0 win over the Knights.

This year, the high-powered CNU offense has led the way, ranking 13th nationally in points per game. The Captains have scored 36 goals, averaging 3.27 per game, and have put away multiple tallies in all but one game this season. Senior midfielder Jimmy Grace and sophomore forward Stephen Durbin each have a team-high 16 points, while junior Andrew Gogolin and sophomore Zachary Ballard have added 11 and 10, respectively.

Defensively, the Captains have earned five shutouts through their first ten games, with sophomore Zach Pedini doing the bulk of the work in goal. Pedini has a 1.06 goals-against average, while stopping over 73% of shots on-goal. His back line has been led by seniors Harry Nodwell, Sammy Blosser, junior Zach Douglass, and sophomore Bobby Seifert.

CNU will take on a Southern Virginia squad that has scored just one goal in the last six games. The Knights have scored six goals this season, with rookie Brandon Zapata factoring into five of them. He has eight points with 3 goals and 2 assists, while freshman Tyler McElwee has the other three goals for SVU. Three different goalkeepers have started for Southern Virginia this year, with senior Keenan Carroll getting the majority of the work. Carroll has made 26 saves with 18 goals allowed.

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available from the game, with links found at the schedule on CNUsports.com. Following the Wednesday night battle, CNU will close out it's three-game road trip as they travel to Frostburg State on Saturday, October 8.
