YORK, Pa. -- On Monday afternoon, the Capital Athletic Conference announced that Christopher Newport senior
Sammy Blosser was named the Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. The Newport News, Va. native picked up the Captains' first honor on the defensive side of the ball this season, and added to his Offensive Player of the Week selection earlier this season. Blosser and the top-seeded Christopher Newport men's soccer team will host #5-seed Frostburg State on Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm.
The Captains played just one game last week, defeating Marymount University, 2-1, in the regular season finale to secure the program's first ever CAC regular season title. Blosser made a big impact in the game, assisting on the game-tying goal, and making a key defensive play to start the run up the left side for the second, and game-winning, goal for the Captains. He also played all 90 minutes as the defense pieced together another stout effort, allowing just two total shots in the game against the Saints.
Blosser picked up his fourth assist of the season in the second half against Marymount when he took a corner kick just over five minutes into the stanza. His cross connected with rookie
Jordan Boone for the score, erasing a 1-0 halftime deficit. Then, about 15 minutes later, Blosser made a terrific play to track down a Marymount attacker streaking down the right side of the field unmarked. The senior defender slid in to make a tackle, stealing the ball and setting up sophomore
Daniel Zeitoun's next touch, which would lead to the game-winning goal on a long pass up the left side.
It is the first time in his career that Blosser has been tabbed the Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Earlier this season, he was named the Offensive Player of the Week after the defender had a goal and three assists in the opening week of action.
Joining Blosser on the pitch Tuesday evening, the #1-seed Christopher Newport men's soccer team will begin play in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament against the #5-seeded Frostburg State at 6:00 pm. Live stats and a live video will be available at CNUsports.com/live, as the Captains host the Bobcats in one of two CAC Semifinal matchups with a berth into the CAC Championship game on the line.
CNU (15-2-1) are riding a ten-game unbeaten streak, including a 2-1 win on the road over Frostburg State in the regular season. The Bobcats defeated Penn State Harrisburg, 3-2, in the opening round of the tournament, improving to 9-9-1 on the season.
Stephen Durbin and
Zachary Ballard scored in the win during the regular season, with Ballard's quick response to a Frostburg equalizer proving to be the difference.
Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for children, cash only.
