NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In the first of two monstrous midseason matchups this week, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will host St. Mary's College of Maryland on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.
The game, which will be available in a live video webcast with live stats at CNUsports.com/live, will pit CNU's league leading offense against the Seahawks' league-leading defense. The Captains (11-2-0, 4-0-0) will boast the nation's 13th-ranked scoring offense (3.15 goals per game) after scoring 41 goals so far this season. St. Mary's (9-2-1, 3-1-0) leads the Capital Athletic Conference in save percentage (.829), goals-against average (0.97) and shutout percentage (0.50).Â
Something will have to give as the Captains' torrid offense has scored multiple goals in all but one game this season while the Seahawks have allowed only two goals in four conference games so far.
The dangerous CNU offense has been led by senior
Jimmy Grace, with 19 points, while sophomore
Stephen Durbin has added 18. Grace is leading the CAC with 19 points coming on seven goals and five assists, while Durbin has scored a league-leading eight goals. This week's CAC Player of the Week,
Zachary Ballard, has chipped in 14 points with six goals and two assists, while five more players have registered at least seven points so far this season. Behind the powerful attack, CNU has won five straight games, including three road conference matchups.Â
St. Mary's (Md.) has already matched its win total from a season ago and carries some momentum into Tuesday's game after back-to-back conference wins last week. The Seahawks downed Salisbury, 2-1, in overtime, and then shutout Marymount, 2-0. Zack Hausler has started 10 games and has done the bulk of the work in net for St. Mary's, boasting a 0.83 goals against average and a save percentage over 85%.
Offensively, the Seahawks lean on Nick Tait, who is tied with Durbin as the league's leading goal scorer with eight. Juwan Kearson is the only other St. Mary's played in double figures with 11, scoring four goals and adding three assists.Â
After the Tuesday night battle with St. Mary's, the Captains will set to host Mary Washington, currently undefeated in conference play, on Friday, October 14 at 7:00 pm.Â
