DOVER, Del. -- Exploding for the most goals in four seasons under head coach Dan Weiler, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team raced past Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday, 9-1. The nine tallies was the most since a 9-1 win over Ferrum in 2012, as Christopher Newport matched the best start through nine games in program history, improving to 8-1-0 overall.

Perhaps more impressive than the nine total goals scored was the fact that eight different players found the back of the net for the Captains.  Including assists, 11 different players recorded at least one point in the game, led by a two-goal effort from sophomore Kayla Locklear.

As a team, Christopher Newport set a new program record for total shots in a game, ripping 54 attempts in the contest while the defense allowed just three shots on-goal.  CNU took 30 shots in the first half and 24 in the second.

The goals would come in bunches, as the Captains were held scoreless for the first 21 minutes of the game, but would close out the first half with a 4-0 lead. Rookie Sydney Rife got the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute, ripping a loose ball after a corner kick from the six-yard line.

Then, back-to-back goals in less than a minute saw senior Victoria Perry set up Locklear for her first, folllowed 53 seconds later by a goal from Angie Williams, assisted by Alex Miller. Miller would go on to put away her own goal just over three minutes later, capping the late first-half surge by cleaning up a rebound for her second goal of the season.

Right off the whistle in the second half, the Captains offense would add to it's lead, when Kimmie Kerstiens played Perry at the top of the box with her back to the goal. The Captains scoring leader than turned and shot over the goalkeeper to cap another record-breaking performance. With her assist earlier in the game, Perry took over sole possession of the all-time record for career helpers.

The home team would get on the board next, as Katie Ford took advantage of a defensive miscue to get an open look and chip over CNU goalkeeper Carly Maglio. It was the lone mis-step in an otherwise dominating victory in conference play.

CNU would tack on four more goals, including three in the final 6:01 of the game. Locklear delivered a hard shot that the Wesley keeper couldn't corral for her second goal in the 69th minute, followed by tallies from Kate Hurlock, Kaitlyn DeBaun and Libby Hinton.

Hurlock's goal was a perfectly placed header on the near post after a nice ball from Alexis Haycraft was taken on a free kick. Rookie Hailey Shaw would then set up the final two goals, which were both the first in the careers of DeBaun and Hinton. DeBaun got a pass in the middle of the field from Shaw, created some space and delivered a shot off the far post and in for goal number eight. Then, with less than a minute to play, Hinton ripped a hard shot from the top of the box off a corner kick taken by Shaw.

After the game, the Captains have now scored 31 goals in nine games for an average of 3.44 per game. Fifteen different players have scored goals this year for the Captains deep offense, while the defense has allowed just four goals during the year.

CNU will return home for a Tuesday night matchup with Southern Virginia University at Captains Field. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
