Box Score in HTML FormatNEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Playing on a wet track and through a steady drizzle for most of the game, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team allowed a first half goal that would stand up as the only scoring in a 1-0 setback to Frostburg State University on Saturday. The Captains lost their third straight, falling to 5-3-1 on the season, with an 0-1-0 record in the CAC, while the Bobcats ran their overall mark back to .500 at 5-5-0, with a 1-0-0 start in league play.
With a coastal storm threatening play all weekend, the teams took the field on time on Saturday, facing a wet field, but overall conditions better than expected. Playing on their home field for the first time in two weeks, the Captains grabbed momentum off the opening whistle.
The first 20 minutes heavily favored the CNU offense, as the Captains peppered shot after shot on the Frostburg defense. Only one shot tested senior goalkeeper Paige Gray in the early run, though, as the Bobcats netminder turned away an attempt from rookie
MiAsia Pinckney in the 19th minute of play.
Another burst came for CNU about seven minutes later when
Lindsay Mondloch took a free kick from about 25 yards out and smashed a hard shot under the wall toward the right side, but Gray made the stop. Then, on the next Captains attempt,
Kimmie Kerstiens forced Gray to make another save; the FSU keeper had four stops in the first half.
After enduring the initial burst by CNU, the Captains foes settled in and started to turn in some quality runs of their own. In the 24th minute, Melanie Bell nearly put FSU on top with a header off a corner kick that went just high over the outstretched hands of CNU keeper
Carly Maglio.
Maglio couldn't stop a shot from Erin Worthman in the 37th minute, though, as the Bobcats got on the board. Worthman surveyed the field looking for a potential service, but found a seam into the top of the box and shot past Maglio to the left corner for her third goal of the season.
CNU outshot Frostburg State in the first half by a tally of 16-8, including four shots on-goal. The pressure would continue in the second as CNU ended up outshooting the Bobcats by a final mark of 23-12, with a 6-3 advantage in on-target attempts.
Twice in the second half CNU had goals called back. The first came when
Victoria Perry was called offsides after burying what would have been her seventh goal of the season. Then, late in the half Perry scored again but was whistled for wrestling the ball free of the keeper in the box.
The loss snapped a nine-game unbeaten streak for CNU against the CAC in the regular season. The Captains will regroup and looked to pick up the first win in CAC play on the road as they travel to the University of Mary Washington next Saturday, October 3 for a 1:00 pm kickoff.
