CHANDLER, Ariz. -- The Christopher Newport field hockey team remained 16th in the latest NFHCA national rankings and will return to action on Wednesday at 8 p.m. when the Captains head to Randolph-Macon for a non-conference battle at Day Field.
Holding steady at 16th in the poll, CNU picked up 199 points in the most recent rankings. TCNJ continued to anchor the No. 1 spot with 31 first-place votes, while Bowdoin and Salisbury remained in second and third, respectively. Middlebury and William Smith round out the top-five.
Boasting a 4-1 record this season, the Captains head into Wednesday's clash with Randolph-Macon after defeating Washington & Lee, 1-0, over the weekend. Meanwhile, RMC sits at 6-2 overall and is currently riding a four-game winning streak.

A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS Through five contests, Christopher Newport is averaging 4.80 goals-per-game, which ranks sixth in the NCAA. The squad also sits eighth nationally in scoring margin as the Captains have combined to out-score the opposition, 24-5, so far this season.
On an individual level,
Carol Thompson leads CNU with five goals, while
Lauren Cheatham boasts a team-high 11 points. Cheatham and
Lisa Murphy also have three assists apiece, while
Alexa Weaver sits third on the team with eight points, including a pair of helpers.
Defensively,
Bailey Lien sports a 1.34 goals-against-average and picked up a shutout against Washington & Lee on Saturday. The team is also bolstered by a stout defensive unit, including senior
Alexa Hendrickson and freshman
Brittan Muir.
Madison Doss and
Moira Wright have also helped anchor the midfield and back line.
LAST TIME OUT On Saturday, Christopher Newport picked up its second straight victory after toppling Washington & Lee, 1-0, at Captains Turf Field. During the contest, Lien made three saves to record the shutout, while
Samantha Snider came through with the game-winning goal off a feed from
Josie Morgan to seal the victory. Overall, CNU held an 18-6 lead in shots and a 14-3 advantage in on-target attempts against the Generals.
SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS Randolph-Macon comes into Wednesday on a four-game roll, including a 2-1 overtime victory against Roanoke on Saturday. Against the Maroons, Kelsey Stanley made 14 saves to earn her sixth win of the season, while Victoria Cappadora added the clincher in overtime. Mackenzie Turner also assisted on both goals by the Yellow Jackets.
Overall this season, Cappadora and Turner both have nine points, while Kali Carroll has scored four times. Defensively, Stanley has a 2.12 goals-against-average and an .830 save percentage. Turner and Erin Cunningham have also contributed defensive saves for RMC.
SERIES HISTORY In 14 all-time meetings, CNU holds a perfect 14-0 record against Randolph-Macon. Last season, Christopher Newport picked up a 3-1 victory at Captains Turf Field. During that game, Cheatham, Morgan, and
Sarah Miller all scored for CNU.
