NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The seventh-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team is back home for the first time in two weeks this weekend as they host long-time conference rival Greensboro College on Saturday, September 19 at 7:00 pm. The Captains (6-0-1) will look to extend its seven-game unbeaten streak to start the season against the Pride, who has started the year with a 2-3-0 record.
Along with the seven-game roll to start the year, the Captains are riding a 15-game unbeaten run dating back to last season with a 13-0-2 record in that stretch. The program record is 22 straight games without a loss when CNU closed 2009 and opened 2010 with a record of 18-0-4.
The all-time series between CNU and Greensboro slightly favors the Pride in 47 career matchups. Greensboro holds a 22-21-4 advantage in the series.
This season, in the 20th season under head coach
Steve Shaw, the Captains have picked up shutouts in five of the first seven contests relying on a stingy defense to start the year. Senior defender
Sean Christein has paired with a pair of sophomore backs,
Cameron Vaughn and
Zach Douglass, along with rookie Bobby Seifert, to hold opponents to just 2.9 shots on goal per game. When faced with those attempts, senior goalkeeper
Nolan Mann has been up to the task, boasting a 0.67 goals against average in net for the Captains.
Offensively, junior
Patrick Burns started the season red hot, scoring five goals and adding an assist in the first seven games. He has a pair of gamewinners, while senior
Ryan Balfour and rookie
Zachary Ballard have each added two each.
Greensboro has scored four goals in their first five games, led by senior Robbie Barnes with two goals and an assist. Craig Gage has assisted on two and added a game-winning goal of his own, as he scored the lone tally in a 1-0 victory over Sewanee. The Pride is coming off a 3-1 victory over cross-town rival Guilford College at home.
