No. 8 Captains Travel to Cialella Soccer Classic For Pair This Weekend

SCHEDULE NOTE: The Captains' game originally scheduled for 2:00 pm on Saturday has been moved up to 10:00 am to avoid potential inclement weather.

CAMDEN, N.J. -- The eighth-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team is back in action this weekend, heading up to the Garden State for the 2015 Cialella Soccer Classic hosted by Rutgers-Camden. First, the Captains, off to a 4-0 start and ranked No. 1 in the first D3soccer.com national poll released this week, will take on on New Jersey City University (1-2-0) at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 12. They will then face off against the host Scarlet Raptors (2-1-0) on Sunday afternoon.

The Captains are coming off a thrilling 4-3 win over N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday to remain undefeated in the young season. Junior Patrick Burns scored his fifth goal as part of a wild first half that saw CNU trail 3-1, but storm back to take a 4-3 lead before intermission. Sophomore midfielder Girma Baker was key in the comeback, chipping in an assist on the game-winning and game-tying goals for CNU.

Overall this season, Burns has paced an offense averaging 2.5 goals per game with five goals and an assist for a league-leading 11 points. Rookie Zachary Ballard has a pair of goals, both gamewinners, and three more CNU players have chipped in scores this year. Defensively, Sean Christein has anchored a strong back line that is allowing just seven shots per game.

Coming into the weekend, the Gothic Knights of NJCU are riding a big 4-1 win over York (NY) on Tuesday. Tyler Krychkowski, who started all 20 games in goal for New Jersey City in 2014, leads the offense with two goals and an assist, while Abdou Touray has added two goals as well.

Rutgers-Camden picked up a 9-0 win over Rosemont in the opener before splitting a pair of games at the Salisbury University tournament last weekend, beating St. Mary's (Md.), 2-1, before falling to the host Sea Gulls, 1-0. The Scarlet Raptors were the national runner-up in 2013 and traveled to Newport News for a matchup with the Captains last season, in which CNU captured a 2-0 win.
