NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Led by reigning CAC Player of the Year
Victoria Perry, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team will return to the field after a long offseason, ready to kick off the 2015 season on Tuesday night. The Captains will host Randolph-Macon College in the season opener, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 pm at Captains Field.
Live stats will be available at CNUsports.com/live.
Perry, the CAC Player of the Year last season, leads a veteran team that will return five of six All-Conference selections from last year's squad. Playing in the third season under head coach
Dan Weiler, the Captains featured a potent offense and stingy defense last season, and will look to build on that success. Perry posted one of the best individual seasons in program history, scoring 35 points on 14 goals and seven assists. She led an offense that averaged over two goals per game, while on the other end of the field, CNU allowed just 16 goals in 20 games played.
The defense was led by 2013 and 2014 CAC Rookies of the Year in
Sam Rabinek and
Kira Warner, respectively. They played in front of junior goalkeeper
Haley Casanova, who is tracking on every single one of CNU's goalkeeping records through her first two seasons. Rabinek and Warner were options offensively as well, combining for four goals and three assists in 2014, including three game-winning strikes. Casanova registered four shutouts last season, and allowed just one goal in seven conference games.
CNU will be taking on Randolph-Macon for the first time since 2002, holding a 4-1 advantage in the all-time series versus the Yellow Jackets. R-MC was picked to finish sixth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's Preseason Coaches Poll after posting a 9-8-1 record last season. It was the first winning season since 2009 for the Yellow Jackets in their first year under head coach Jay Howell.
Senior forward Bridget Panas returns for her final season after leading the team in scoring last year. She had five goals and three assists for a team-leading 13 points. Fellow senior Meghan O'Neal added 11 points on four goals and three assists. Defensively, another senior will likely factor into the starting job as Elizabeth Blanco started 15 games with a 1.30 GAA last season.
Opening kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Captains Field. Parking can be found in lots E and I -- a campus map can be found
