Captains Drop 8-0 Decision to Salisbury in NCAA Super Regional

CNU Must Beat Salisbury Twice Saturday to Advance

SALISBURY, MD.- Senior All-American pitcher Rachel Johnson held the Captains of Christopher Newport to just one hit Friday afternoon as the Sea Gulls of Salisbury posted an 8-0 victory over CNU. The win in the NCAA best-of-three Super Regional came in six innings due to the eight run rule.

Keith Parr's squad now must win twice on Saturday over the host Gulls to advance to the National Finals next week.

"They executed today and we didn't," Parr said following the defeat that leaves the Captains with a 30-8 record. "Tomorrow is another day, we need to re-group and come out ready to go."

Johnson went the distance, yielding only a fifth inning single up the middle to sophomore outfielder Rachael Shiflett. The senior righthander struck out seven and walked three while improving to 22-5 on the season. She threw 102 pitches, 67 for strikes.

Salisbury, now 34-6, jumped on CNU starter Hanah Marshall for five runs in the first two innings. Marshall took the loss to fall to 16-3.

The Gulls closed out the win with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth to record the 8-0 verdict.

Junior first baseman Paige Knussman led the Sea Gulls at the plate with a double and her eighth home run of the season. Knussman scored twice and drove in three runs.

The victory was the first this season for Salisbury over CNU in four games played.

The teams will play at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, and a CNU victory would force a deciding game at 3:30 p.m.
