SALISBURY, MD.- Saturday's story was much like the one on Friday for the Christopher Newport softball squad. The 11th-ranked Captains were dominated for the second straight day by Salisbury senior pitcher Rachel Johnson, as the Sea Gulls posted a 5-0 victory Saturday afternoon.
Salisbury, now 35-6 and ranked fourth in the nation, will advance to the NCAA Division III National Championship next week in Salem, Virginia.
The defeat marked the end of the season for
Keith Parr's Captains, who finish with a record of 30-9.
"They again got the job done and we didn't," Parr said. "They're a great team and you have to play great softball to beat them. I'm very proud of our team, we did a lot of great things this year, but just came up short."
It's the second straight season Salisbury has knocked the Captains out of the tournament in the Super Regional best-of-three series.
Senior righthander Rachel Johnson, who threw a one-hit shutout on Friday, again was spectacular. Johnson allowed three hits in her second straight shutout performance. She ended up throwing 13 innings against the Captains, allowing no runs on four hits for the weekend.
The Sea Gulls got all the runs they would need in the first inning, scoring twice off CNU starter
Krista Lewis, who went the distance. Lewis allowed five runs on eight hits to end the season with a 14-6 record.
Junior first baseman Paige Knussman was four-for-four with a double and home run, her second in as many days and her 10th of the season.
Junior
Tori Clarke, sophomore
Rachael Shiflett, and freshman
Brittney Walters all recorded hits for CNU in the defeat.
The loss marked the final game for CNU seniors
Sabrina Hill and
Kelley Foate. Hill concludes her illustrious career as the all-time school leader in hits, runs batted in, and total bases. She was named conference Player of the Year three times in four years of action.
