Box Score vs. St. Mary's (Md.)NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With a dominant 9-0 victory at home against St. Mary's College (4-8, 2-4), the 39th-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team clinched a spot in the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The Captains improved to 12-8 overall with a 5-1 record in league play.
It was a strong team effort as CNU captured the win by a final tally of 96-6. All three doubles matches went by way of the 8-0 sweep, and three of the singles battles were 6-0, 6-0 finishes. Rookies
David Reed,
Max Katcher and
Dillon Sykes picked up the shutout wins in singles play, at line 1, 5 and 6, respectively.
In doubles, the Captains raced through play for the quick 3-0 advantage, which included a win at No. 1 doubles from
Michael Dodd and Reed together.
Steven Boslet and
Chiraag Shetty added to their team high with 11 doubles wins at No. 2, and
Arttu Fiva played with Katcher for the shutout at No. 3.
Seeding will be decided through the Captains final match of the regular season, when CNU will face Salisbury University. With the win, CNU erased a three-game losing streak and will play one more match before facing off against the Sea Gulls. The tilt will be a non-conference matchup with nationally-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan this Sunday, April 12, on the road.
